Security Update for Flash Player Error 0×643

One of the brand new laptops at my company had a small problem with Windows Update. Every 5 or 10 minutes the automatic update notifier would pop up a message that a new patch is ready to be installed. Each time the installation would fail with an error message 0×643.

The faulty update was Security Update for Flash Player (KB913433).

It appears that this is one of those weird problems that affects enough people to yield few pages of meaningful Google hits, but not enough for anyone to actually find a good solution to it. It’s really bizarre.

The only workaround I was able to find was to delete flash.ocx and swflash.ocx from the %systemroot%\system32\Macromedia\Flash\ directory and reinstall your flash and shockwave players if needed.

This does not fix the problem, but it stops Windows from prompting you to install this update. The KB913433 will no longer show up as a critical update. Which is good I guess. It seems that this patch is tied to some specific version of Flash and the newest builds do not include the vulnerability.
