hmm.. it appears that email notifications aren't reaching me

They used to, and I don't remember changing anything but for quite a while now I haven't been receiving anything (This is just the first time I actually checked and confirmed there were comments sans notification)

Correct!

I think it is somehow fitting to have the Laughing Man and "The Number" associated with eachother. :)

Btw, I loved both the show and the movie (although I never saw the sequel). I also read the manga.

From GhostInTheShell:StandAloneComplex - Season 1. The icon is that of The Laughing Man.

Even if you didn't like the GhostInTheShell movie (as my wife didn't) the tv series was very well done.
Well one part has to be that the characters round the edge are the HD-DVD encryption code so famously spread across the face of Digg (and just about everywhere else)
Yep, you are correct. 5 points for guessing it first.

As for the second part - here is a hint: it's a logo, and it was used in certain anime show. Name that show.

yeah i'm with matt, i don't have the characters for the hd-dvd crack memorized, but pretty much any hex floating around is gonna be that. and I don't know the other thing either. it does kinda look like a disc but that couldn't be it.

I'm assuming the other part is to do with the face in the middle but its not ringing any bells for me
