Top Commentators and Top Posts

If you hit up the front page you will see two new little things in the sidebar. One is a list of the 10 most popular posts on this blog. All of my posts that got dugg at one point or another will be there, along with some of the big discussion threads that had interesting back-and-forward going on in the comments.

The second addition is a list of Top Commentators - which is you guys. This is my way of sending some love and some Google juice towards my regulars. You guys are awesome!

At the moment my top 10 looks like this:

    * Luke (1151)
    * Matt` (194)
    * ZeWrestler (148)
    * Craig Betts (128)
    * Travis McCrea (97)
    * Wikke (74)
    * Fr3d (65)
    * StarHawk (58)
    * Miloš (52)
    * Ara Pehlivanian (51)

It turns out that I’m the most vocal commentator on my own blog. But it’s not because I like talking to myself all the time - it’s because I always try to respond to comments posted by others.

Btw, Matt` - any luck with the email notifications? I mucked around with various things, but I’m not sure why you’re not getting them. I’m at a loss here. You wanna try a different email address, just for shits and giggles?

Anyway, you guys are awesome!

      It’s interesting that the way you decide which posts are most popular by the number of comments. On my blog, though it is still very new, this wouldn’t be the case. My posts that bring in the most steady traffic are “Free Unix Shell Services” and “A Lighter Firefox,” yet my “Friday’s Links - Volume II” has the most comments. I think I would judge it more by the number of page views.

      Good point. I initially used a plugin that took comments, trackbacks, pingbacks and page views into account, but it was clashing with WP-Cache. I really just wanted something simple that would put the posts that were getting digg action in the sidebar.

      Previously I linked to these big posts manually. The list generated by the plugin is astonishingly similar to what I had before, so I was happy with it.

      Ok. Since I’m new here (I think this is my 3rd or 4th comment), I’m sending this comment to try to compete a little more in this ranking of Top Commentators.

      Hey, Ricardo - you should get a Gravatar. This way we can see a little avatar next to all your posts. It takes just a few seconds, and will work on all the blogs that support Gravatar api. )

      Fr3d - technically, you are #6, since my list is zero-indexed. ) In other words, I don’t really count in this ranking.

      Ah cool maybe my 58 now 59 comments will make up for my pitiful 1 Luke point. lmao. And yeah Gravatars are cool, they actually show up on another blog or two I recently started commenting on. I had no idea they even used them D

      Well, per your suggestion above, I got a Gravatar. I was going to register several months ago, but the site was down for new registrations at the time. It is a nifty service… I probably need a better avatar for it.

      Starhawk - LOL. That reminds me I haven’t given out any points in a while. I still have to reveal their mysterious purpose and all too. mrgreen

      I’m actually registered on couple of these avatar services. I just like my picture appearing on all the blogs that have these things.

      MyBlogLog is another big one - I see it all over the place, so I nabbed a free account.

      Jake - Yeah, their website was down for a while recently. It was like months of downtime. A lot of people moved on. I jumped on the bandwagon after they returned.

      wait.. crud, gmail.co.uk doesn’t exist, or if it does I don’t have an email address on it (note to self: change more than the domain name when editing email address)

      Ok, this one is the test of whether it works or if the notifier just doesn’t like me

      Your systems really have it in for me - I put in another comment denouncing my own stupidity for only changing “hot” to “g” and forgetting that gmail.co.uk is non-existent, and now that’s in the moderation queue

    13. Gravatar Luke UNITED STATES Says: Reply to this comment

      Actually, I have it set so that all new emails go to moderation queue first. It’s a pain in the ass on digg-days, but usually it is yet another layer of spam protection.

      Your posts should work normally now.

      Wohoo! And you got a Gravatar too! I like these things - they kinda put a “face” of sorts on the comments.

      I fixed it! I’m no longer a contender. P So Matt` slides into first place, and… Another Matt comes in from below. Same Matt? Differen’t Matt? I don’t know. But he is there. P

      Well, the Gmail address works - notifications abound. Although since I don’t check it that often, and I’ve gotten used to not having the notifications I think I’ll just go with what Firefox decides to fill in for me, which appears to be the hotmail address

      And I think the other Matt is someone else.. I don’t remember posting comments without the little ` thingy.

      and I think I do remember seeing a Matt already on a list of commenters, which was why I put the ` on the end in the first place

      Btw, another great way to keep track of comments is co.mments.com - I use that on all the websites that do not have email notifications.

      You can set up co.mments.com to send you notifications also. P

      Well… The comments get tracked automatically - you post them, they get stored in the database. Then it’s just a matter of running some simple queries.

      Hey, Matt` - I noticed that your Gmail account has a gravatar, but hotmail doesn’t. You should get one for this account too - since you are my top poster and all. )

      I tried to add a second email address but it didn’t want to let me
      So I registered a second account and uploaded the same image again

      I was expecting the whole time to hit an error that told me to go back and pay them for the privilege of a second email being served with gravatars, but it didn’t materialise.

      I’m fairly sure the hotmail one now has it as well, this comment being the check
