Transformers
Saturday, July 7th, 2007Has anyone seen Transformers yet? Let’s discuss. The previews made it look much more of an “edge of your seat” kind of movie. It was not. It’s a light hearted pulp flick with large dose of humor. It was pretty much the quintessential summer movie: tons of CGI, loads of cheap laughs, pop culture references abound, annoying mini-transformer doing silly Jar Jar shtick, Bernie Mac makes a cameo appearance, and of course geeky high school kid wins the heart of a popular girl and saves the planet. You know - the usual stuff.
One thing bothers me. Why did they insist on giving Optimus Prime lips? I can understand why they wanted to make Bumblebee a Camaro or why Megatron doesn’t transform into a pistol. But you’d think they would at least keep the unique, iconic characteristic that makes Optimus instantly recognizable. It’s kinda like that scene from the Familly Guy:
“What tattoo do you want? I can do Kermit the Frog.”
“I want a flaming skull.”
“Ok, I’m going to do Kermit the Frog”
Hard core transformers fans should probably stay clear of it unless they can stomach all these changes and inconsistencies. This adaptation was done the old school way. The new way, pioneered by LOTR, and perfected by Sin City and 300 emphasizes staying true to the original. The old school style is to take the names, and general concept from the original, then change everything, write a new story, jazz it all up, and take it to the extreme 90’s style. And this is exactly what was done here.
The end result of this treatment is not that bad. It just doesn’t feel like transformers - it feels like you are watching a typical summer blockbuster with a transformers theme. I was not impressed by the movie, but was not horribly disappointed either. It was enjoyable and amusing.
What did you think about it? Did you like it? Hate it?
Btw, what do you think about Megan Fox? She doesn’t really do anything for me. Sure she has a nice body - I’d hit that and etc, but - meh. Not crazy about her.
