Slashem might be a bit different app - that might be why it didn't work for you. I only tried setting up server with the plain vanilla nethack version.

I may check out slashem just to see how the new races and classes play. :)

For differences between Nethack and Slash'em check out the aptly named Differences Between Slash'EM And Nethack which will give you a good rundown.

I've been toying with the idea of setting up a slash'em server actually- and have tried it using your useful instructions. However, my linux skills are woefully inadequate. :( I am enjoying Ubuntu Hardy immensely.

Dominions is very strategy centric as well as very deep. Probably not for you if turn-based strategy isn't your bag.

I never really tried Slashem. What are the big selling features?

Never played Dominions or Master of Magic. Then again I'm not a big strategy game buff. But I will admit that strategy games can often have quite a bit of replay value - especially the ones that have a nice "explore, conquer, evolve without some overarching storyline" game play like Civilization.

Nethack RULES SUPREME!
Love that game- Although I've been playing the 'Slash'em' variant more the last couple of years.

Another game I never tire of is Dominions 3- a brilliant turn-based strategy game by Illwinter. Talk about DEPTH. 3 Eras, each with 20+ races, each race is VERY different. Over 1700 different units altogether... if you liked 'Master of Magic' at all, then check this one out. :)
