Conflicted Characters == Good TV

Tuesday, December 26th, 2006

You have to admit that Starbuck is going off the scale in the BSG personal issues department lately:

But here is the thing… Conflicted characters make for good TV. This is because usually having well defined, conflicted characters with issues translates into character driven stories. I said this before and I’ll say it again:

Character Driven Stories > Plot Driven Stories

Why? Because we grow to like these characters, and become invested in their stories. Dialog and character interaction become much more than just devices to move the plot from point A to point B or to deliver back-story fluff or to explain the unraveling story to the viewers. When you have a good set of characters, each with personal goals, issues and agenda you don’t really need a “crisis of the week” type of scenarios. If you need a filler episode that is not part of the major story arc, just take two characters with conflicting agendas, have them butt heads and then just play the group dynamics to see shifting of alliances and etc… Depending on how you play it, you can have a suspenseful drama, a tear jerker, or action packed joyride.

But that’s just my opinion.

BSG Simpsons Style

Tuesday, December 12th, 2006

Unless you live under a rock, you probably already seen these already. I seen them surface on BoingBoing, Meta and dozen assorted random blogs. But these BSG Characters drawn Simpsons style are just awesome enough to link to them anyway.

Is it just me, or does Starbuck look a little bit more butch than usual as a Simpsons character. I also love how Sharon’s baby is a toaster.

I think now we just need to get the BSG characters South Parked for balance. P

Jump Tactics

Friday, October 20th, 2006

The other day I was thinking about space combat as featured on most Scifi Shows and movies. In most cases, most ships have some kind of FTL engines that allow them to make “jumps”, enter hyperspace or whatever.

But then in most space battle scenes you see both sides using conventional propulsion to maneuver into position. If I had FTL engine I would use it to my tactical advantage. Jump behind the enemy battle line, fire few salvos and jump away, only to appear at a different point few minutes later. We could of course argue that jumps can’t be executed fast enough, or are not fuel efficient enough to use as a battle tactic. But that’s bullshit.

When was the last time you saw a pre-jump prep last longer than few minutes on any Sifi show? When was the last time someone run out of fuel in space? Fuel or prep-time very rarely stops anyone from making really quick emergency escape jumps.

The only logical argument against using FTL for tactical maneuvering is the fact that in the heat of battle you could accidentally jump into another ship. What happens when two ships jump into the same location, or to a location occupied by another ship varies from one universe to another, but it is almost never a pleasant thing. But with some careful planning you can still use jumps as good opening moves, or surprise attack moves without much risk…

I just watched the new episode of Battlestar Galactica and holly friken shit! They did use insane jumps to create strategic advantage! The idea to enter the planet’s atmosphere via jump was totally awesome. I would never even really consider that. But that’s probably cause I would be to afraid that the hull of a deep space battleship would collapse upon itself in atmospheric pressure. Hell, most fictional universes have some funky rules about dangers of jumping really close to a gravity well of a planet. But, apparently Gallactica jumps do not have this sort of restrictions, and battlestar class cruisers can actually pull off atmospheric entrance. )

This is exactly how do you use the shit out of your FTL in battle! You bait the enemy, and then appear somewhere where they totally do not expect you.

Battlestar Galactica: Exodus

ZOMG! Tactical FTL!

This was a good episode. I kinda missed space battles, and the military themes in the last two episodes. The tactical use of FTL was great. Unfortunately I’m forced to subtract half as star for the obvious Deux Ex Machina.

All in all this was a very satisfying ending to the New Caprica story arc. It seems that the writers effectively reset the show to a pre-pegasus state. I contemplated docking it another half a star for that, but I think it’s not going to be a big deal. BSG writers know better than to use the good old “reset to the last working state” trick.

My rating: 4.5 stars
****1/2

BSG is still one of the best shows out there. I’m really glad that rumor about moving to NBC turned out to be false.

Could this be the end of BSG?

Monday, October 9th, 2006

The are rumors that NBC is considering a purchase Battlestar Galactica. If this is true, we might be seeing the end of the show as we know it. As much as I hate Scifi Channel, I have to admit that they traditionally allow their high rated shows to get away with relatively bold, and gutsy stuff. This was the case for Farscape (before they canned it) and now it is true for BSG.

The show is known for tackling controversial social, religious and political issues. If the show moves to NBC, will the network follow Scifi’s hands-off policy of allowing the writers to run wild, or will they try to tame it down for NBC audiences? Will they try to suppress the evident political commentary, and steer the show into more neutral waters to avoid angering conservative partners and sponsors? Will they pull the plug on religious themes in BSG to appease their bible beating, near-primate, logically impaired, evangelical viewer base?

For the show’s sake, let’s hope NBC reconsiders…
