LOL Adsense

Friday, September 7th, 2007

Apparently, based on my emails (all of which are in English) Google Adsense thinks I’m Chinese Japanese. I opened up an email notification sent from this very blog, and I saw the following ads on the side:

WTF Adsense?

I have absolutely no clue how Google connected the comment notification emails from the thread about the UK National Lottery scams to some Asian advertisers. Maybe they are running scams too? I have no idea. I just found it funny.

Two Disturbing Sounds

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

Here are some disturbing sounds that will haunt your dreams, give you nightmares and generally creep you out. What you do with them is up to you. You can use these in constructive ways - for example, I know that some game masters like to use music as mood building tools. Putting the Shepard’s Tone track onto your gaming playlist could create hell of a creepy mood for those Call of Cuthullu sessions. Or you can use it for some disturbing pranks - like smuggling the backwards musing onto someones ipod’s easy listening mp3 playlist. )

Anyway here they are:

First up is the Sheppard’s Tone - it is a sound that seems to be continously rising or falling, but really doesn’t. Best description of it I heard was that it is the audio equivalent of a barbers pole - it seems to be moving, but it doesn’t. The sample I have here is really ominous and creepy:

[Sheppard’s Tone OGG Sample]

Second is actually a shortwave radio recording from a Numbers Station. I wrote about these mysterious spy stations in the past. The interesting thing about this stations is that they don’t always use a voice reading off words or numbers. Some use odd music like recordings. I previously linked to the creepy russian polytone sound [direct mp3 link]. This recording is even creepier - it is some music recording played backwards:

[Backwards Music MP3 Sample]

This one literally makes my skin crawl for some reason. Please feel free to link to your picks for ultra creepy and disturbing sounds in the comments. )

The Bloop

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

Have you ever heard about The Bloop? It is a mysterious sound recorded somewhere around 50° S 100° W. It was captured by US hydrophone array which was formerly used to detect Soviet submarine movement during the cold war. No one has been able to identify the source of this strange noise, but most researchers agree that:

  1. it seems to be organic in nature
  2. it doesn’t match any known marine animal sounds/calls
  3. an animal capable of making this kind of noise at that volume and frequency would have to be larger than a blue whale

Why am I writing about this? Well, the location of Lovercraft’s fabled City of R’lyeh is 47°9′S, 123°43′W which is disturbingly close to the location of the bloop sound:

Apparently the distance between these points is well within the range of how far this sound has traveled before it was captured. In other words, the sound may have originated from 47°9′S, 123°43′W.

Is this just a weird coincidence, or perhaps something more? You decide. Personally I think that whatever this is, it is made out of WIN. mrgreen

O R'lyeh?

In the meantime, if you ever wandered how Cthulhu sounds like you can check out the wiki page of the Bloop. They do have a recording available. )

Fox News Produces Epic LULZ

Saturday, July 28th, 2007

This is about the funniest thing I have seen on the interwebs in a while:

youtube link

My reflections on the video:

  1. Fox News needs to LURK MOAR
  2. Even Fox obeys rules 1 and 2
  3. Hackers on Steroids on my /b/? LOMAO!
  4. The Lulz Killer guy did not say enough memes. I was waiting for barrel roll, bringing back snacks and bell air. Such a waste.
  5. That exploding car “demonstration” was priceless.

You got to love the overblown media sensationalism, over-exaggeration and unnecessary fear mongering. This is the proverbial “making a mountain out of a mole hill”. But then again, what else would you expect from Fox.

Oh noes! They be selling Johnny 5 on Ebay!

Sunday, July 22nd, 2007

Oh my! Look at what I found:

They Sell Everything on Ebay These Days

Apparently someone is selling a full size robot from Short Circuit movie. Now, I don’t think that this is the Johnny Five (despite misleading label) because that dude is a citizen now:

So unless we have reinstated slavery and no one told me, this must be one of those non-alive robots. But fear not - we have a plan:

  1. Buy the robot
  2. Live it outside during a thunderstorm
  3. Robot gets hit by a lightning and becomes alive
  4. 80’s style situational hilarity ensues
  5. ???
  6. Profit

Also, we will get a deal for a sequel, without virtually any of the original cast, save some of the extras.

Anyway, it seems a bit expensive for a fake robot, and one that is not even alive at that.
