@Chris Wellons: I agree, but at the time I was pressured by lusers to adopt their ways. These days lusers tend to feed all their pictures directly from their camera into their Facebook accounts so I encounter less of these “let me send you that picture real quick over IM” issues. :P

Oh and most chatting is done over Facebook anyway.

Hence, I don’t even know how the most recent incarnation of AIM looks like.

I love Gaim, but it has one drawback – the file transfer feature does not work properly. So I was peer pressured into using the official client.

Yep – it can be done. You might need to use the ResourceHacker tool to edit the DLL files, because Microsoft started circumventing the HOSTS file in the most recent versions.
