Poor rhesus monkey with mange :( mange caused by a mite that lays eggs and released feces into the skin causes loss of fur or hair and skin to shrivel up. Most mange victims die. The blood cells dry up

wait, no, it’s snout isn’t nearly long enough to be a baboon. chimp? and I guess you can’t easily tell if it’s a male or a female… definitely sick though

um, I’m pretty sure it’s a baboon, probably not a genetic thing, she probably lost her fur because of an illness. it’s sad that we can usually only see our genetic similarities in terminally sick primates.

@raquel: Oh wow! Nice to hear from someone who met this guy in person. Very interesting.

Also, for someone who lived half of his life in Warsaw Poland, and the other half in New Jersey it is actually extremely bizarre to imagine living in a place where bald monkeys steal your shirt and rip it up while mocking you. It just sounds surreal. :)

HI! I realize it’s been a while since you first posted this picture.. but i’ve just found it doing some googling.
This monkey (and i’m quite sure it’s the same) lives in Varanassi, India.. next to the Ganges river. I first “met” it a few years ago, as it was living in front of the hotel’s rooftop i was staying in. Rumors say it’s lost its hair when it stole a tourist purse and ate all the medication inside. It was the ugliest thing i’d ever seen!! It was the only male in it’s group.. the rest of the females and baby monkeys were quite agressive and horrible as well. In fact, we had several fights as they used to steal everything they found on their way. I remember the time when they actually stole my t-shirt and ripped them off in front of me.. i swear they were laughing!!!
Anyway, hope this’ll satisfy your curiosity about the hariless monkey.. quite a leyend in varanassi.

This picture looks like the family of man…does the physique of this monkey speak at all to evolution or am i just over reacting?

Oh wow! Good catch. It does indeed look like a rhesus. I didn’t think of mange. I feel bad for the poor thing now. :(

Cryptomundo FTW!

This appears to be a rhesus (Macaca mulatta) or another variety of macaque monkey suffering from mange, and the resulting loss of hair due to that condition.

As to the comments about chimpanzee skin color, the various subspecies have differences, from light to dark, as well as it changing depending on age and health.
