[…] The common folk has developed an unparamount hatred for Vista. Get this, they actually hate it more than we do. How funny is that? Normal people hating a Microsoft product more than Linux geeks – I didn’t think I would live to see this day. Of course they are not ready to switch to another OS – let’s not be crazy here. They are still deeply locked into the MS monoculture. But they fucking had it with Vista and they want a new shiny OS from Microsoft that doesn’t suck. Let’s face it, the Vista experience is rather painful. […]

Well, from what I heard Leopard is a bit buggy, and slower than tiger still. Apple seems to have dropped the ball on that one. :/

There are many things in the above post that I wish I had known at the time

Oh well, I’m pretty likely to be back on Ubuntu at some point (and if not Ubuntu, I’m guessing the terminal commands don’t change) so I’ll remember that for the proverbial next time

Hmm… Your FF profile is usually in your home directory (~/.mozilla/firefox) so no root password should be needed. I don’t think you are supposed to overwrite the /etc/firefox one. That’s the default profile for all the users.

Also you can always do sudo nautilus or sudo konqueror to get a file manager with root privs.

Oh, and bash has file name completion. If you type in a command, and first few letters of the file you want to apply it to, and press TAB, bash will finish the filename for you.

If there is more than one choice, just press TAB again, and it will show you all possible choices. Then just type in more letters, until the string is unique and press TAB.

I’m not denying the power of a CLI to do all the things that don’t need a button of their own, and do them quicker than a GUI when you know what you’re doing – the main reason it annoys me is that I have no idea of what it can really do or how to make it do it. I am also very lazy  (I probably should have said this in place of “annoys me” in the first place)

That and the requirement for getting all the names + syntax right every time can get annoying

Anecdotal example: I tried an install of Ubuntu for a while and one of the first things I wanted to do was copy the info from my Firefox profile in Windows over to Ubuntu, it wouldn’t let me delete the old folder, or copy in the new one without root access, and typing the name of the folder (random jumble of letters and numbers.default) multiple times because I’d got the syntax slightly wrong got old very quickly
f they could make a distro that didn’t require use of terminal I would love them forever – CLI annoys me
Really? At this particular moment I have about 10 xterms open for doing various stuff. Some of these are gnuplot sessions, some of them I’m using to run quick awk scripts, and some of them simply spy on the output produced by some of my running experiments.

I love CLI. If I had to copy, paste and sort by hand all this data, I would shoot myself. :)

However, most modern linux distros do not “require” much use of CLI these days. With Ubuntu, you should be able to do just about anything from within a GUI of some sort.

The only thing that I can think off that would require you using the shell, would probably be compiling from source. But then again, I don’t even remember the last time I compiled something on Ubuntu – everything I wanted was in the repositories.

I’m sticking with XP because of the comfortable chair effect, if MS make it too uncomfortable with lack of support/patches then I’ll jump ship and find a Linux distro

Although I’ll probably actually spend the time between now and the “death” of XP trying out Linux, getting used to how it works

If they could make a distro that didn’t require use of terminal I would love them forever – CLI annoys me
