LOL! Fortunately I never saw that re-cut version, but I read about it. It would probably be amusing to see it just for laughs though. :P

As for the dub – I guess in my mind felt to much like an old Disney movie which just didn’t fit with this movie. That’s just the kind of vibe I got from it. I’m really not a subtitle nut – the original just sounded better to me for some reason.

But I guess to each his own. :)
True. Still Patrick Stewart nails it for me!

Just a small advice. If you do pick up this movie, watch it with the original Japanise audio and English subtitles. The DVD offers this as an option instead of the English dub, so I was able to compare both versions. Trust me, this is not just some sort of purist conviction that subtitles are superior. If you watch the same scene with English and Japanise audio you will see the difference. To me the original seemed stronger, more raw and emotional while the English was tad annoying. It had that “old Disney movie” quality to it which I personally didn’t like.

I hate to be the jerk again but I actually liked the dub just as well as the original (having seen that a decade ago form nth generation fansubbed copies). Have the original on LaserDisc too. If anything, it was a vast improvement to what America had 23 years ago when some lowly distributor felt they could only market this as a ‘kids movie’ and preceeded to do so by editing out about 30 minutes of the film, changing the names to terribly B-movie types and gave it lackluster writing out of a Saturday morning cartoon! Lord knows it’s impact was devastating…
Very good point – these movies seem to appeal to people of all ages.

So far I saw Nausicca and Howl’s Moving Castle, but I do plan to catch up on some of the other Miyazaki work. :)
Pretty much saw ’em all except for Howl’s Moving Castle.

That time theme is particularly interesting to me.

Not quite in the same same direction, but have you read some books on theme of somic serpent by Jeremy Narby? At least about jungles and what beasts could live there or in all living things. Could be a bit related to your work…

I highly recommend pretty much all of Hayao Miyazaki’s films even to anime “newbies”. They are generally short, easy to related to and understand, beautifully animated, and actually not brain-dead like 90% of Japanese anime as well as western films.

Furthermore, Miyazaki’s films are amongst the select few that are truly appealing and interesting to all ages and levels of sophistication; you can enjoy them with your whole family ages 5-90, or write about them for a college film class.

Also, since most of our knowledge these days is stored digitally, will they actually be able to figure out how to play our movies and music? Will they ever be able to figure out how internet worked? Who knows. :P

I always wonder how civilizations in the distant future will sift through the archaeological remains of current times, and make assumptions about how we lived.

Yep me too. Soda bottles beer cans 500 billion AOL CDs junk cars and lots of toxic sludge. Who knows what the hell they gonna think of all that?
