Happy pi-day!

Regarding 3.14 being an approximation: I don’t see this as any problem for declaring this as pi-day; at some moment in time during pi-day when “all the digits line up” there is a genuine “pi-moment” (which moment that is depends on your definitions, but still. Let us not get into discussions about the Planck time, ok?)

Your ending story really reminded me of the ending of this poem about labeling keys. (On that topic, here is my personal favorite Taylor Mali poem.)

@Luke Maciak:
Yes, but what is not a rough approximation of pi? I mean, it goes on forever so no matter how many digits you write it’s still going to be an approximation.
Yeah, that’s why I like to write the greek letter instead. It’s the only compact form I know (ok, I guess you could write it as a series).

Happy Pi day anyway!

Next year I’ll put an enormous poster of Pi on my wall to celebrate.

Happy Pi day folks. I celebrated today by having a pie (chicken balti) just before quarter past three this afternoon (see what I did there?), then for tonights meal I bought a pizza…. bet you cant guess how much it was…. well actually it cost £2.38 but after buying a can of beer and a few sweets I made it up to £3.14 – shit I need re-evaluate my life.

Actually I think April 26th should be PI-day, try to figure out why…
TIP: in some years it would be April 25th!

@Luke Maciak: Man, how could I miss that P-NP reference! I must be more vigilant in Futurama!

@Nathan: Yeah, thanks for freaking me out. I red your post and sat here for 5 minutes trying to figure out what date it was.

My mind went pretty much like this:

Wait, is it still March? Fuck, maybe I missed it and it’s April now. Jesus, that would be embarrassing if I posted the Pi thing in April. Then again, this wouldn’t be the first time when I lost track of time. I usually only lapse a day or two. For example I will put in the Thursday backup tapes into the servers, then come back on Wednesday, routinely switch them to Friday tapes and on Thursday I go:

“WTF? It was Thursday just two days ago!”

Let me consult my computer. It says 3/14… March is the third month, right? I mean, it used to be. January, February, March. Yeah, that works. Let me double check it: Styczeń, Luty, Marzec… Yup, it’s number 3.

Ok, let me check online cause my laptop time might be wrong. Nope, 3/13 today so it’s definitely 3/14 tomorrow. WTF is going on?

Then I noticed I made a typo. So yeah, thanks for making me doubt my sannty there for a minute.

@dawn: Yes, but what is not a rough approximation of pi? I mean, it goes on forever so no matter how many digits you write it’s still going to be an approximation.

@Mart: LOL! I haven’t seen that episode. Simpsons are surprisingly full of intelligent humor. It has nothing on futurama though which pulls off stuff like this:

Not that this has anything to do with pi – I’m just saying that Futurama wins on geeky humor.

In The Simpson’s season 9 episode 3 entitled “Lisa’s Sax”, when Homer and Marge visited a private school to see if they could enter the very young Lisa in, at the beginning two girls were clapping their hands in rhythm while singing (around 10:16 mark). The song goes:

Cross my heart and hope to die,
Here’s the digits that make pi,
three point one four one five nine two six five three five eight nine seven nine three two three eight four six… (fades)

I was giggling like mad when I first watched it.

Happy Pi Day!

First, because it’s required by law, 3.14 is only a very rough approximation of Pi.

Then, that comic reminds me of the jokes a friend and I make up during math class. Once the teacher was talking about approximations of e and said “there is nothing between 3 and 4” (he was of course talking about natural numbers). My friend and I imagined e going from village to village, trying to find its place, then meeting i.

“Man, I don’t fit in there,” says e.
i, very depressed, replies: “Leave me alone, I’m not even real.”

Oh, the joy of math class! But that’s not on topic… Have you seen the film Pi? If you haven’t, don’t. It’s not really targeted at math geeks. It’s full of mistakes and the scenario is probably the result of a bad trip.

PS: once the math teacher was talking about Cauchy sequences and said: “the limit is somewhere in that spaghetti”. :D
(Ok, now I know I’m weird.)

I actually didn’t know that March 13 could be written as 3.14! I also didn’t know that tomorrow was March 13! The American calendar is even wackier than I thought!
