You have put religious revelation, drugs and science fiction in the same post. What did you expect? Google logically pulls out scientology.

@ JAMBARAMA:

Yup, Ubik, Stigmata and several others are on my to-read list. I read a review once which claimed that Dick is peculiar in that he is more of a mainstream artist/philosopher who uses SF as a guise that allows him to smuggle his messages into your brain, rather than a genre author who imbues his prose with ambitious philosophical messages. Or something like that.

@ Alphast:

All right. Added to my Amazon wish list. :)

Also, did anyone notice that this page is full of Scientology ads? WTF? How the hell did that happen? And how do I tell adsense not to advertise scientology on my blog?

Philip K. Dick is awesome… By the way, if you are looking for a book which is going to fuck up with your brains, look no further than Anathem, by Neal Stephenson. Certainly more quantity than Philip K. Dick, but no less quality.

Philip Dick is under appreciated among sci fi fans IMO. The big 3 – Heinlein, Asimov, and Clarke – get all the attention. The only reason anyone talks about Dick is because of Blade Runner (Electric Sheep), but Ubik & Scanner Darkly are among the best in science fiction. Right on par with Vonnegut (who is my absolute favorite) and his books like Mother Night & Cat’s Cradle. They all have had long-term effects on me after reading them, they give you a specific perspective, but at the same time they haze over your mind a bit.

I haven’t read VALIS, but I’m going to next time I get to the library. Thanks for the review. I’ve heard some of Dick’s other books are just as good: Three Stigmata, Dr. Bloodmoney (Dr. Strangelove reference?), Man in the High Castle, & Flow My Tears – but I haven’t read them yet.

@ Jenn:

Nah, Twilight will actually make your IQ drop a point per chapter. I know, because I read it and it was painful. The review is here btw.
