@ k00pa:

Yes, graphics are very nice, but that goes without saying. Most modern games look gorgeous. What I like is the art design – the stark colors, contrasts, etc. Very well done.

On the other hand, I didn’t as much care for the cartoon cut scenes. Their style didn’t really fit the hyper-realism of the game IMHO. Not to mention that all of them could have been easily rendered using the engine itself.

@ JKjoker:

Oh wow. You never got lost in that huge room with the columns connected via concrete walkways and scaffoldings? I had no clue where to go because there was absolutely nothing red in that room.

And yeah, the sniper thing was silly. It took me like 10 attempts to get it right, and even then it was mostly pure luck. The truck should have had a flashing red component or something – you know, like “aim here”.

Also: how the hell do you make a game without actually having a story first? Wow!

ah yes i remember that boat i got stuck twice there, i didnt have as much trouble getting to the sniper as i had trying to snipe the thing they tell you to snipe, the game kept telling me i did it wrong, i had no idea wth was going on and every time you “do it wrong” you have to run part of the way to the sniper again

about the story, i think this game is a great example of “dude, you got your story all over my gameplay”, its completely irrelevant, adds nothing, you dont care about anyone, makes little sense and it just helps to bring the game down altogether, game devs need to learn that sometimes all you need to do is give the player a vague context and then let him/her have fun

btw, i remember reading an article about the story “writer” Rhianna Pratchett where she said that they gave her the levels already finished and told her to write something to chain them into a story, no wonder it sucks, the fact all the games that i know RP wrote (Overlord 2 for example) are also crappy doesnt help

I have to disagree.

Mirrors edge is good game. Got it from sale on steam for about 2e, but I would not pay anything above 20e for this game.

I love the graphics of this game… Blooom…. The end music is also awesome.

But yeah, there is lot of stuff to improve.

@ JKjoker:

Ah, yes! I got lost int that mall too. I also got lost on the stupid boat in couple of places. But the absolutely worst level design was that large hall with the columns and walkways near the point where you get the sniper gun. There was no red anywhere and it was like a puzzle – what can you jump at or wall run to. I probably died like 50 times there before I figured out where exactly did I need to go.

i kind of liked some parts of mirror’s edge (mostly the same as you, the parts where you can pick up speed and just run without dying), ME is at its best when it feels like the ending of the matrix when Neo is running like crazy for the phone and agents appear everywhere.

i liked the tension of seeing the cops following you but it really sucks when you get stuck looking for the next red thing and they reach you

while the trial and error gameplay can get a bit frustration i hated the indoor bits much more, they are dull, you dont even get a choice between jumping a fence or running around it and they have the highest probability of getting you lost (i remember a particularly bad part when i was stuck inside a mall with respawning cops with machine-guns and couldnt find the not-red exit, that wasnt fun)

@ Liudvikas:

Yeah, the game is fun when you can just run uninterrupted. Eventually though you fall off the edge or run into a large group of enemies and then the fun is over. Or the game goes into a cut-scene and you just sit there wondering who the hell approved this script in the fist place. :)

@ Zel:

Well, you only get couple of shots with each gun, so in most cases you have to perform several disarms one after another.

Also as far as I could tell 99% of the time there was only one correct way to beat the level. There is an illusion of choice sometimes but it is just that: an illusion.

I think the heroine does a ledge grabbing move if you’re too short, sometimes… It might depend on the game’s difficulty, I think I played it on Easy. Combat was not hard because you can use the guns you recover to shoot people down and health regeneration makes you immortal if you’re a little bit careful. You need to do the quick time event to get the first gun and then it’s FPS time. Most of my death were due to the precision jumping, especially when sliding.

The game is quite short, but you can run Time Attack challenges if you enjoy this sort of things. I do remember having the impression there were multiple paths to objectives, but I played this quite a while ago and honestly don’t remember the actual levels so well.

Actually I liked Mirrors edge.
Story might not be very deep, but it’s just enough.
Gameplay might be based on trial and error and I agree that more fluid movement might be better, but there’s only a few points where you’ve got to position yourself perfectly. I almost
always just ran and ran without stop, except for that occasional fall.

And their making a sequel, so we’ll see how they improve it.
