Woah, thanks for reminding me! I was actually recommended this movie by several people when I was at a New Year’s Eve party in San Francisco last winter. Was a bit embarrassing because I hadn’t heard of it at the time, and they wanted to know what I thought of it :P

I haven’t gotten around to watching it yet, but maybe I should. At least I won’t need any subs ;)

Yes, just thinking about the French remakes make me cringe: True Lies, Nikita, they were all to puke, compared to the French original ones. I think that Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulain was not remade though and got some success in the USA with just subtitles.

Agreed, I hate dubs. Even if I don’t speak the original language I rather hear the original voices. I actually had and option to see the American dub of this movie but went for the sub version. The experience is superior.

Also, I like listening to people speak in languages I don’t understand. It always interests me how the inflections, modes of speaking and accents change between languages, and yet remain so similar. If you do this, you start noticing how much Latin has influenced most European languages, how different languages tend to borrow and localize words from each other.

I never really studied linguistics in any depth but I always found it fascinating.

Yeah, I just found out there was a book. I read the first few pages of Amazon and it seem good. I might pick it up.

It means exactly what I said in the post: Americans do not watch foreign movies for some strange reason. The most you can hope for is a limited release which means your movie will air in a few major cities in small theaters that are located in hipster populated neighborhoods.

I honestly can’t name a single foreign subtitled/dubbed movie that had a nationwide theater release.

So when there is a really, really good movie that was made abroad, Hollywood will snatch it up and remake it. There are two factors here:

1. They know that most Americans have not seen or heard about this movie
2. They know that the movie did well with critics and made money

It’s almost guaranteed profit – the only thing less risky than remaking a critically acclaimed and successful foreign movie is making a sequel to a successful domestic film. :P

Read your review this morning — just realised that it’s showing on SBS (Australia) tonight. Coincidence? I think not!

The SBS ad for it said “a movie so good that the Americans had to remake it”

In Spain they dub everything, and it’s painful. I couldn’t agree more.

I read the book a few months ago, and I liked it. I’ll go for the movie.

Yeah, Let the right one in is absolutely brilliant. For once someone stays true to the lore of vampires. Unlike some very successful, but absolutely shitty movie that will not be named. I hope Let Me in is a decent movie, it would be nice if they didn’t fuck up this time.

Thankfully it’s usually subtitled here in Portugal. I can’t stand dubbed versions of most films. In Spain they dub everything, and it’s painful.
Nowadays if the movie is in English I can just ignore the subtitles.

I haven’t seen the movie, so I can’t comment on it, but about non-USA made movies, I have seen Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring a month ago, and I recommend it.
The story may be somewhat simplistic, but the photography is absolutely stunning.
