This and 13th Floor predated the Matrix and I still think they are better, if obviously similar movies. The visual style in Dark City remains fantastic.

I saw this when it first came out on video, and it had a great long voice-over by Kiefer Sutherland at the start that explained in large part what was going on. I take it the version you saw didn’t? If not, good – it spoiled the mystery more than a little a bit.

(Just checked Wikipedia, and it appears the 2008 director’s cut removed it for that very reason.)

Yeah, I missed this movie when it hit theatres. But love it now. Very stylized and solid throughout. Quite enjoyable. Better than, and not pretentious like, The Matrix.
