I guess they mimicked the real world calculator with all its limitations to achieve user acceptance – anybody who used a real life calculator will be able to use the software version.

Microsoft hires smart people and I believe the person that made that version died a little inside while making it for artificially mimicking limitations of the real world technology, but that is what users want. Just like the fax at the Chinese place.

Well the online to fax order is kinda cool in a masochistic fetishy way. It’s sometimes fun to use outdated technology for modern needs :)
