@ Chris:

Yep, this movie did exactly what Special was trying to do, but it did it the right way.

Btw, what did you think about the [spoilers]rape scene?

I like Ellen Page – I think she is cute. So initially I was like “oh, nice” but then as the scene progressed it made me more and more uncomfortable. And even as I chuckled at the “don’t cover your mask, I want to see how you look in it” thing, I was also quite disturbed by what was transpiring. Which is I guess a mark of a really good black comedy writing – you are laughing, but at the same time it gets you, it disturbs you, and it makes you think and re-evaluate things you took for granted.

Also, I did not know about Captain Australia. LOL Is he really for real?

I saw this post this morning, read the first sentence, looked at the first picture, and decided I would watch it before reading anymore. I’m glad I did.

Like you, I had completely the wrong impression going in. Super went the direction I thought Special would go, but didn’t (disappointingly).

I enjoyed it, but it’s probably not a film I’ll watch a second time. Something did bother me about the violence in the movie. I’ve watched movies with that much gore before, but this was different somehow. I think you hit the nail on the head with the reason:

But when a middle-aged, flobby guy splits someone’s head with a pipe wrench, and then fall down while running away it makes it surprisingly real. It hits closer to home.

And I think this is a very precise one-line description of the movie.

Super delivers the same amount of violence, but with about as much grace as you would expect from Napoleon Dynamite movie.

Also, at the beginning when Libby asks why no one has done the super hero thing, what about Captain Australia?
