Huh, I guess it was a thing to do back then. I’m sort of glad we are out of that phase. Though, I fear we have swung the other way and nowadays you can’t have a quiet second in a movie without some action.

Zardoz is really just a contraction of Wizard of Oz. The eternal charged with herding the brutals decided to call his false godhead this way, because the charade reminded him of that timeless story.

And remember kids, using the letter z a lot in names makes the names sound exotic.

I saw Zardoz in 1974 (I was like 19) and I quite liked it… although the costumes and the lengthy psychedelic sequences already felt embarrassing by then. But that was a thing of this time: think of the endless hyperspace scene in ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ six years before, which BTW was an amazing movie, where Kubrick got the special effects right. But he had a budget ten times bigger than Booman had for Zardoz!

All I’ve seen of Zardoz is endless youtube parodies, so this was a very interesting review. Someone should cut it together again, might improve it.
