@ Morghan:

Yeah, the one great thing about e-readers is that you can put a lot of content in a compact little bit of plastic and silicone that fits in just about every bag. I recently packed up some old books ant put them in the attic to get rid of some clutter and I started putting them in one of those cheep plastic bins. The bin was about 1/4th full when I realized I could no longer lift it. Books be heavy, yo – in more ways than one.

@ Liudvikas:

New awesome books of course. :) I guess after the singularity we will need to concentrate more on human condition and less on cool concepts – but until then, I think there will be no shortage of high concept SF out there.

@ StDoodle:

Yep, I totally meant do do that and totally did not go off on a random tangent. :P

Actually this was my clever ploy to spurn discussion, as I felt a lot of people might not be familiar with the book and wouldn’t have much to say about it. Comments are my virtual karma and sustenance. ;)

Was the last paragraph on e-reading supposed to be taken as a commentary on the narrative “jumpiness” of the novel, or am I reading too much into it? ;)

You mentioned my greatest fear. I love scifi and it takes majority of my reading time, but I’m scared of the future – I have to await with dread for all the technological developments, because I know that by then all the books I loved and had fond memories of will just look silly. What will I read then?

I agree on the paper books, something seems to be missing when reading eBooks, though the Kindle is a LOT better than some of my old readers from before eInk displays and relatively intuitive navigation. The only reason I switched to Kindle was because I’ve had to sell my library off three times now when I moved and didn’t have the space to bring it along. I can’t say that I prefer electronic books to their dead tree counterparts, but I can throw my Kindle in my pocket or bag instead of loading up box after box of books and then renting a larger van and a storage unit when I get where I’m going. Hopefully when I end up where I’m going to stay I’ll be able to find a house where I can have my own library, until then I don’t see much alternative to using a device where I can store my entire library in a space smaller than many paperbacks.
