Magic is a lot of fun, though I managed to stay away from it for most of my life. I’d argue that keeping up with the game is about as expensive as Warhammer in the long run… In a way saying you got into it instead of 40k is very much like saying “I wanted to try coke, but it was expensive so I started doing crack instead” :P

I used to play Middle Earth the Wizards CCG so I kinda know how it feels. There is that “this is the last booster I’m buying this week, I swear” kinda thing always going on.

The nice thing about 40k and WFB is that unlike most CCG’s you don’t actually “need” to own the models to play. I once knew a guy who built a space marine army out of of his old legos because he couldn’t really afford real models. Granted he couldn’t take it to a hobby store or play in tournaments, but within our group of friends everyone was perfectly ok fighting the lego marines. I think the other day I saw someone posting Lego imperial guard army on reddit too. :P

As long as you have a few people to play with on a regular basis the models are really optional. In fact, in most groups it is kinda expected that newbies will slowly build their armies over a course of many months or even years and playing with stand-in / proxy models in the meantime.

I’ve continually wanted to get into warhammer 40k but man, its too dang pricey for the startup costs in time and money!

So I got into magic right before Christmas… My wallet hurts but the community is really awesome where I am!
