@ Victoria:

TIL that there is a post-credits scene. I turned it off to early. :P

But yeah, the cliche beats were marvelous. Let’s not forget a tough guy who hides the fact he has a terminal illness which manifests itself via an occasional nosebleed. It was actually pretty amusing to see the hero go: “Dude, I saw your nose bleed – how much time left have you got?” :P

It’s sort of silly how much I loved it. And I agree, I wanted more of everything.
This movie hit every possible cliché of all types of movies it had merged, especially anime.

A cute Asian girl – check. She speaks about our hapless somewhat uncultured hero in a language he’s not supposed to know to the Father Figure but the guy understands her – check. The hero needs a sparring match to find the right companion – check. The rival douche pilot – check. Tough bear-like Russians in a Chernobyl-named robot – check. Etc. And the silliest thing – I LOVED the movie for it. It felt like those movies from my childhood only done in modern cgi. Even the douche rival died a heroic death.

Here’s a test I developed for this movie: imagine a huge human-shaped robot beating a humongous gorilla-shaped alien with a tanker over an over again – if you like that scene, you’ll love the movie.

If this were anime, the girl should have been the lone survivor standing over the body of her beloved with her hair flailing in the wind :)

The lost shoe fetish was kinda funny :) I’m glad the smuggler made it after the credits.

@ Jason *StDoodle* Wood:

Well, in my defense Safety Not Guaranteed starred Aubrey Plaza so writing an unbiased, objective review was probably impossible for me. :P I’m pretty much only capable of grading her movies on mainstream video game review scale (ie. the only valid ratings are between 8-10 on a 0-10 point scale). So keep that in mind for the inevitable Life After Beth review that is bound to crop up here (because zombies).

I also really enjoyed her To Do List but wisely decided not to review it here because it would not fit with the overall theme of the blog. Maybe I’ll put that up on limelog if and when I decide to resurrect it. It kinda died because I stopped watching crappy movies I could review there and got bored working off a back-log of movies I wasn’t really passionate about.

But yeah, Pacific Rim probably won’t be on Netflicks for a while. Just came out on DVD so you’ll probably have to wait a while. It’s very simple but kinda fun and it works. My expectations were super low for it, so maybe I’m overly positive because it pleasantly surprised me.

Huh. I had the impression that this was one of those “my time would be better spent hitting my head against a concrete wall” types of movies, but so far I’ve been in agreement with your assessment of movies and books all but once* so maybe I’ll give this one a try after all. Well, if / when it’s on Netflix, anyway. :p

* Safety Not Guaranteed
