Last Exile

Last Exile

Take out a piece of paper and write this down: Last Exile. You can add that title to your “anime I must watch” list, because it a damn good show. So far I have watched 8 first episodes, and I’m hooked. And from what I hear, I still didn’t get to the really good part yet. :P

The unique thing about this show is the setting. You have huge flying battleships, small wingless planes stylized after WW1 fighters, Victorian era uniforms, naval battles in the skies, and a mysterious Guild with high tech ships and gadgets. It’s a steampunk with a twist.

I would recommend watching it even to see the gorgeous air battle sequences. The show uses a unique blend of traditional 2D animation, and 3D CGI effects. The two are interwoven really well and really help to portray the rush and urgency of fast paced air combat.

The characters are likable, and the plot is intriguing even if it is a little slow at first. I’m willing to bet that if you liked Fullmetal Alchemist you will also enjoy Last Exile even though the two series are very different from each other. What they do have in common is great character portrayal, original setting, and a slowly unraveling mystery.

I highly recommend this title.
