I’m currently in the process of watching season 1 of Lost. I never seen the show before (with exception of S2 finale) so it is all brand new to me. I’m about 6 episodes into the series, and I’m hooked. In one way this is awesome, because I’m watching it all without annoying commercial breaks, and I don’t have to wait a whole week to see what happened next.
But on the other hand I suffer from the usual late to the party problem. Since just about everyone on the planet has watched the show already and discussed it to death I don’t really have anyone to talk to about the episodes I just saw. Very few people want to talk about events from the beginning of season 1, unless in the context of some mysterious stuff that has happened much later. I on the other hand do not want to get into any deep analysis of the recent episodes or speculations for the upcoming season because I do not want to get spoiled more than I am right now.
I don’t even try to check out the Lost forums before getting well into season 2 because I would get… Well, lost in the sea of speculation. The good part is that by the time the new episodes roll out, I should be all caught up so I can join all the others in the craziness.
So far here are my reflections on the show so far:

- Evangeline Lilly == teh hawtness
- I wouldn’t mind getting lost with Evangeline Lilly
- This show is really good – I can’t believe it didn’t get canceled
- Where the fuck did that bear come from?

I too came late to this series, though not it seems as late as you. I have even watched the addtional extras ~ how sad is that?
My overwhelming impression, after the initial intrigue, was that this series is in fact quite vacuous, brain candy ~ looks good, pretends to be high on content but is in fact floundering around trying to find a direction. This total lack of coherent structure has been interpreted by many viewers as mystical meaning. Sad it is that artlessness can fool so many into thinking that it is really full of meaning and structure on the part of the writers. In fact they just make it up as they go along which is why there are so many continuity flaws. Great for them that viewers interpret these gaffs as being deliberate and meaningful.
I am reminded of those who get so excited over another piece of pure fiction called the Da Vinci Code. Fiction is fiction ~ it’s not real and it is sad when fiction becomes accepted as being a truthful account of reality.
Just my view and I expect to be screamed at as some kind of philistine.
I’m about 10 episodes in now, and so far this early part S1 seems to be heavy on character developement and light on mystery. This is one of the things I like so far. They nicely flesh out all the main characters, showing bits of their backstory. I love how alot of them either turn out to be the complete oposite of what we expected initially (eg. Locke being a disabled office clerk in a box company) or seem to have allot of personal deamons and skeletons in their closet.
Judging from what I seen in S2 finale episode the show does a 360 flip somewhere along the way and turns into a mindfuck factory. I will probably have more to say on this once I catch up to that point.
One thing though – most long running TV shows suffer from the retcon syndrome. Especially in mystery heavy shows like this you write episodes purposely leaving loose ends, and unused plot hooks hoping that at some point later another writer will be able to exploit them. If this is done well, viewers will never know if they are seing retroactive continuity patch, or a unfolding plotline that was purposefully kept dormant for half a season.
In 99% of cases we can safely assume it is a retcon, but it is so much better to just pretend that they actually planned this from the beggining.
You’ve fallen into the Lost trap and now there’s NO TURNING BACK. Good job. I’ll never fall for it.

Well, the trap is quite entertaining so far, so I’m not complaining. I usually watch TV shows very selectively. And so far I have spent exactly zero US monies on this show (ie. I do not own any DVD’s or merchendise) so I think I’m good.
Besides, I can stop watching whenever I want… Seriously! I won’t, but I could if I wanted to… :P
