Here is a question for you – how do I do anything with a Sun JDS Release 2 system? Sun has end-of-life’d it, and there is no community around it. So I have an old system here that no one uses anymore. There are no packages for it, no patches, no way to easily upgrade it. I think I’m just going ot install the x86 version of Solaris 10 on this machine at some point in the future.
For now though I need it up and running for my research, and I don’t really have time to mess around with reinstallation. I’m just wondering if there are other JDS users out there, or am I the last one. :|
If you know any dirty JDS tricks (like using SuSE packages, or hacking Yast to use SuSE repositories) I would love to hear them.

I dumped JDS back when version 2 came out. I got tired of ripping out my hair trying to get stuff to install. My biggest trick was to install Solaris 10 instead. My end users’ desktops looked the same since JDS is really just Sun’s twist of Gnome. Since I have been a Solaris admin for almost ten years, is was cake for me to maintain. Sure, I have issues getting some software to install on Solaris, but for the desktop users, I was able to provide everything they needed. I had StarOffice for the M$ Office replacement, Goggles for DVD (even with the DeCSS junk), mplayer with the Quicktime codecs for video, XMMS for audio, and rdesktop for that occasional need for Internet Exploiter. All tried and tested on my very own Solaris workstation! :-D
I am such a geek . . .
Heh – Install Solaris 10 seems to be the generall attitude towards this isssue on the internet. Either that or Install Real Linux Distro.
