I just heard that there was a big power outage at MSU just now. I started pinging various hosts on campus and it seems that most of the infrastructure managed by the CORE group just went down. And I suspect that it is entirely possible that all these machines just went down hard, without a warning.
Pegasus is down and not responding. Both the cs server and the csam server are completely dead. One of Dr. Zaritzki’s clusters also seems to be dead. Evangelion, my jds workstation located on campus is also not responding to pings – I don’t have a UPS on that one, so whenever there is a power outage, we crash hard and fast. Fortunately I didn’t really have anything running at that machine at the moment so nothing was lost.
Miloš and Jimmi’s blogs also seem dead at the moment, and newton (the machine on which they host them) is not responding either. So it’s not just Richardson Hall that has sucky emergency power infrastructure.
Surprisingly enough, the main MSU website seems to be up. So I’m guessing the data center in the University Hall still has power – or at least a good fail over system. Either that, or they decided to host the main website off the campus precisely because of events such as this one. :P
One good thing that can come out of this: perhaps my firewall rule allowing me to VPN to work from campus will finally go into effect. I heard that this is the only way to actually get firewall related things done at this school – you either pounce on the sysadmin and whine until it works, or wait for a power outage.
In case you wondered, here is a chart of unplanned MSU power outages as of today, brought to you by Miloš:

Yeah, we had another power outage. Isn’t this great! :(
The entire campus lost power for the 4th time this year. The reason why the main site was up is in the fact that the main data center (located in the University Hall) has a diesel generator which kicks in and keeps main stuff up.
I don’t know what else to say. I’m pissed off. Today’s my day off and this shit happens. Can’t wait to deal with our servers now.
Shit ALLWAYS happens on your day off. It is a golder rule that never fails.
We should seriously get one of those generators for Richardson Hall. I mean, we have two clusters there, and a very nice brand new rack mount setup full of servers.
Hell, any building with any kind of servers running in it should be on a generator.
