This is an actual conversation I had at lunch today (note we all watched the latest episode of BSG – if you didn’t you may get spoiled):
cow-orker-1: | So what do you think about BSG? |
me: | I don’t get why they killed her… Especially after making this whole episode about her “destiny” |
cow-orker-1: | Maybe they will bring her back as a Cylon? |
me: | Could be… although it would be kinda lame. We would see it coming a mile away. |
cow-orker-1: | That would explain why Xena recognized one of the final 5 – it could be her |
me: | True.. It would be lame though. Here is what I see: a. she is just plain dead which would make no sense considering all that destiny buildup b. she is one of the final 5 which would be super lame c. the writers came up with something so clever we won’t figure it out yet |
cow-orker-2: | Or d. time travel |
cow-orker-1: | hmm…. |
cow-orker-3: | maybe she will bump into Desmond on her way back in time |
everyone: | LOLZ! |
So, what are your thoughts on the untimely demise of Ms. “I make my own destiny! Oh wait, maybe I don’t”?

I am still under the impression that Dirk Benedict is the only actor that should be playing Starbuck. I just couldn’t get into the remakes. Everything seems wrong and goes against my warm memories of the original show back in the seventies. Besides . . . Jane Seymour was the bomb back then! :-D
I had the same feelings initially – I saw the pilot and hated it. For a long time I ignored it but at some point during season 2 I gave in to the peer pressure and decided to check out what where they all cooing about. And I got hooked.
Once you get past the differences, and the liberties they took with the BSG setting you will see it is actually a really good show. It is not really a remake of the old series. It’s a completely different show with it’s own mythology and own theme that is very distinct from the original.
The writing is excellent most of the time. The acting is top notch, and the creators are not afraid to tackle controversial topics.
It is the entire new story part that bugs me. Its kinda like the new Doctor Who series where the Timelords are now gone . . . just doesn’t feel right.
I just tell myself that this is a completely different show. Although it probably also helps that I only have very fuzzy memory of the original – so sometimes I don’t even notice that they are recycling names and/or themes.
I never was that much into Dr. Who so I can’t comment on the new series. It kinda annoyed me that they keep switching the lead actor so often. And I know that they have a mythology to explain it, but still.
I guess Dr. Who can get away with this kind of stuff, but any other show that decides to start replacing main characters is pretty much setting itself up for failure. Case in point Sliders. The show went from decent to complete crap when they did this.
OMG! I totally forgot about that show! Sliders was one of my favorites! Another one I miss is Otherworld. It wasn’t on for very long, but it had an awesome plot and good stories.
You mean this Otherworld? I never saw it.
Farscape was also a great show although the quality sometimes varied from episode to episode. Acting was always good, and the big episode arcs were great but the show did suffer from filler the “crisis of the week” episodes from time to time. And they did do a Road Runner cartoon spoof episode once. :P
Still, I loved it nonetheless.
There used to be more Timelords in Dr Who?
I’ve only ever seen the new ones so I honestly don’t know
Also, when you mentioned this BSG person bumping into Desmond, is that a Lost reference or is there another Desmond who also travels in time?
Nope – it’s Lost reference. I know of only one time traveling Desmond. :)
