Hairless Monkey is Hairless

I found this one one of those random image sites some time ago, and I still can’t figure out what the fuck is it:

Hairless Monkey
author unknown

I did some googling and I can’t find any info on any species of hairless primates (well, other than us humans). But maybe I’m not looking in the right places. Is it just a monkey that went bold? Is it suffering from some genetic condition? Kinda like some sort of reverse hypertrichosis?

I need some zoologists and/or cryptozoologists come here and give me some answers now.

Eilleen – I actually had to look up Nair. It’s a depilatory cream, right?

Which of course brings up another possibility here – maybe someone just shaved a monkey and snapped the picture for shits and giggles. 8O

mrjones – aren’t Gargoyles supposed to have wings or something? ;)

Yup, it’s a depilatory. I don’t know if shaving the monkey would result in his/her skin looking like that–unless someone decided not to put any sunscreen on him/her and the poor monkey was left out in the sun to bake.

Hmm… You know, I have no clue what monkey skin looks like. I think chimpanzees and gorillas have dark skin – at least by looking at their faces, hands and feet. Some monkeys do have light skin, I think…

Hmmm when i first saw that photo I thought it was fake, man made, something along the lines of a Gargoyle perhaps. tho honestly it is kinda hard to tell, I truly hope tho it is not a monkey someone shaved or whatever. It could be some kind of birth defeat or illness but I still think it is fake. It is just too muscular looking to look real to me. Most primates are not, people included unless they try to be!!

As to humans being hairless actually we are not, we are covered in hair, usually a very fine “fuzz” but in some of the more unfortunate usually males of our species it is quite clearly FUR. My last employer falls under that category… sadly for him i might add.

Anyway the great apes all have light skin not dark as commonly thought. I’ve always been fascinated with human evolution so I kinda knew that but a google search reveals several sources that fact.

“Chimpanzees have pale skin and are born with pale faces that tan as they grow older. So the prototype hominid too probably had fair skin under dark hair, said Dr. Nina Jablonski, an expert on the evolution of skin color at the California Academy of Sciences.”

Why Humans and Their Fur Parted Ways

However, I can’t swear to the skin color of other primates. Not hardly a primatologists ya know. Personally I’ve never even met a chimp just a couple of monkeys here and there and lots of humans.

still I’m voting for that monkey is fake, odd tho ya brought this up as i stumbled across that pic myself sometime ago pondered it for a while and then went on with my random internet exploration. lmao

Interesting. I assumed their skin was dark because of their faces and etc… But then I do recall seeing pictures of baby chimpanzees with light skin.

    Hmm….

I’ve seen this one and other pictures of hairless chimps.
I think it’s just an anomaly, like humans with hair all over their faces.
Imagine this creature in a charred flight suit with its ears burned off along with its hair–what would it look like? We did use chimps as part of the space program. What if one or more fell to earth–say in Roswell, NM? What would you think it was?

I googled hairless monkey, because last night I had a dream of one. And your link came up first. What strikes me as truly frightening is that this pic looks exactly like my dream. His expression is so intense. I am getting chills right now. In my dream he was in the middle of the street where I grew up and I had to save him from the cars and traffic. I was not afraid but I knew my duty was to get him out of there. Later I dreamt that Owen wilson’s brother died, but his name was Christian Wilson… none such person exists and further more, why did I dream of Owen Wilson? TRuly bizarre. I just wanted to say, that I dreamt about this very hairless monkey last night. I have no idea what that means.

  12. This appears to be a rhesus (Macaca mulatta) or another variety of macaque monkey suffering from mange, and the resulting loss of hair due to that condition.

As to the comments about chimpanzee skin color, the various subspecies have differences, from light to dark, as well as it changing depending on age and health.

Oh wow! Good catch. It does indeed look like a rhesus. I didn’t think of mange. I feel bad for the poor thing now. :(

HI! I realize it’s been a while since you first posted this picture.. but i’ve just found it doing some googling.
This monkey (and i’m quite sure it’s the same) lives in Varanassi, India.. next to the Ganges river. I first “met” it a few years ago, as it was living in front of the hotel’s rooftop i was staying in. Rumors say it’s lost its hair when it stole a tourist purse and ate all the medication inside. It was the ugliest thing i’d ever seen!! It was the only male in it’s group.. the rest of the females and baby monkeys were quite agressive and horrible as well. In fact, we had several fights as they used to steal everything they found on their way. I remember the time when they actually stole my t-shirt and ripped them off in front of me.. i swear they were laughing!!!
Anyway, hope this’ll satisfy your curiosity about the hariless monkey.. quite a leyend in varanassi.

@raquel: Oh wow! Nice to hear from someone who met this guy in person. Very interesting.

Also, for someone who lived half of his life in Warsaw Poland, and the other half in New Jersey it is actually extremely bizarre to imagine living in a place where bald monkeys steal your shirt and rip it up while mocking you. It just sounds surreal. :)

um, I’m pretty sure it’s a baboon, probably not a genetic thing, she probably lost her fur because of an illness. it’s sad that we can usually only see our genetic similarities in terminally sick primates.

wait, no, it’s snout isn’t nearly long enough to be a baboon. chimp? and I guess you can’t easily tell if it’s a male or a female… definitely sick though

Poor rhesus monkey with mange :( mange caused by a mite that lays eggs and released feces into the skin causes loss of fur or hair and skin to shrivel up. Most mange victims die. The blood cells dry up
