Favorite Tech News Site: The Poll

Yes, I am aware I’m recycling content. We already talked about our favorite tech news sites before. But, we did not have a poll to see which one of them is the most awesome one. And yes, you can only vote for one of them even if you read several. That’s because we want to see which news sites has won the hearts and minds of Terminalists. Also, the plugin I use to make these polls does not support multiple selection and I can’t be bothered to find one that does. So vote for your most favoritest website of all time:

{democracy:27}

Feel free to add more sites – I just picked the few big ones that I frequent myself. Just no spamming please.

I voted for Reddit because overall I spend the most time there. I must admit that I like their brand of inane silliness mixed with my serious news. Also, I get to make fun of my co-worker who is an avid Digg reader. Pretty much every day we have this conversation:

Him: “Yo, did you hear about XYZ?”
Me: “Yeah, I read that yesterday… On reddit….”
Him: “LOL asshole!”

Do you have news site rivalry at your home/workplace?

Slashdot’s the only one there that I read, and I’d probably put it at the top of my ‘tech news’ list. Not many others on that list to be honest… there’s “Techradar” (formerly tech.co.uk) and some gaming news sites, but that’s about all.

I used to have Digg in my feed reader too, but it generates a whole lot of unread items, and most of them I wasn’t that interested in. Maybe I should give Reddit a try…

I read /. mostly because of the discussion.

I found that once a large community has been formed, the quality of comments is more or less set for life – moderation systems take care of that.
And I think the quality level of Digg is much lower than in /. – posts like “LOL YEAH DUDE” get “+2 diggs”, while they would be downmodded hard on /.

Tried Reddit once, but it was a couple years ago, I might give it another try.

    @ Matt`:

One thing I have learned about high volume news sites was “do not put them in your feed reader”. It is tempting because you don’t want to miss out on good news stories but… Well, the truth is that sites like Digg and Reddit can generate over a 100 entries in your feed reader per day and you will never be able to catch up with such volume of information.

I noticed that I was always the most content with my news sites when I just visited them the old school way – by typing the URL in the address bar and skimming the content on the front page. I believe that’s the way to do this.

You subscribe to blogs, but you skim and peruse the news sites. :)

    @ IceBrain:

I think /. has more focus because of the way their submission and approval process works. Reddit is more democratic but at the same time more chaotic – so you get a mix of silly pictures, memes, political rants and tech news all mixed up.

You can to a degree control your reddit experience by creating an account and then adding/removing subreddits from your front page. For example I removed /r/politics and added /r/rpg and /r/scifi and similar to my page and my experience improved. :) Also when you nix /r/pics, /r/humor and /r/wtf the site becomes much more news/tech oriented.

    Ummm…

You mean there are technology news sites out there other than Lxer?

Damn…. I need to get out more.

Slashdot for thorough thoughtful discussion, reddit for more variety, community, and clever puns.

Reddit is great once you unsubscribe from economics, Politics, Atheism, Worldnews, DoesAnybodyElse, pics, funny, wtf, and iama. Even if you are a highly political athiest who loves world news and funny pictures – dump those reddits. Maybe science and technology too, if they keep going the way they have been.

For general reddit stuff, I like tldr and maybe bestof. If you just like good articles, see FoodForThought, universityofreddit, modded, truereddit, depthhub and Lectures if you don’t mind videos. If you’re a foodie, check out Cooking, Food, Baking. If you’re a science guy, check out hardscience, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Maths, & Cogsci. If you’re a techie, check linux, netsec, and reverseengineering. If you want little tips and such, try frugal, howto, DIY, SomethingIMade. If you must have a funny-type subreddit, use humor. Youshouldknow and redditstories can be good or bad. newreddits is worth checking out.

Remember, photography not pics, business not economics (though business is following econ as fast as it can), coding, not programming (though programming has been better lately).

I used to go to Digg, but now it has become bit annoying place. It feels like everybody on Digg just wants to get stuff on frontpage.

Reddit is great place because the community there is awesome. And the subreddit thing is awesome :P

I used to prefer Slashdot, but ever since a friend showed me Hacker News a few weeks ago, it’s been my only source.

I’m surprised to find it’s actually so popular. It *feels* small.

Dude, you just blown my mind. I didn’t even know some of these subredits existed.

    Thanks!

I read Engadget, purely because the comments there are priceless… the commenters are either completely stupid or quite intelligent.

Their reviews are good too, as are their smartphone articles… pity very few of them are relevant to an Aussie like me :'(

Wow, who voted Tweakers.net? That’s my favorite one too, but I voted Ars Technica as I thought English only..

That was me! I love Tweakers.net. I go there for the price comparisons and stay for the news. To be honest it is the only `news’ site I read. (plus they have the iPhone app for better mobile reading.)
