I remember a conversation with a fellow student a couple of years ago. He insisted that computers (he meant OSes) wouldn’t improve much after Windows XP. After all, XP could do everything users could possibly need. I found the idea laughable, but there was just no point in arguing with him.

On the other hand, let’s not forget that most people in the sixties were convinced that humanity would have inventend flying cars by 2011, but they couldn’t even imagine a communication system along the lines of the internet. Thechnological progress is rapid, but it’s hard to predict what’s going to be the next big thing.

I only get the 500’s when posting comments. Perhaps it’s the redirect’s fault, somehow?

Yes, I did. And yes, it did. Amazing book.

Charlie Stross is one of my all time favorite authors these days.

Otherwise, I do not agree with you when you say that it will be that simple to switch from hardware to wetware. There’s a huge leap to come across when you’re talking about hooking on the optical nerve and feed it understandable input!

Well, of course. It won’t be simple at all. But again, you have to keep in mind that technological progress follows an exponential curve so it will keep speeding up. So by the time researchers will start seriously thinking about designing wetware it won’t be a leap anymore – it will just be a big step. But yes, we have a long way to go.

Oh man, did you read Accelerando, from Charles Stross?
