Happy 4th!

Happy Jeff Golblum and Will Smith day everyone!

INDEPENDENCE FROM ALIENS

INDEPENDENCE FROM ALIENS

If you don’t know what this is about, you haven’t been paying attention.

Hint: it’s about aliens.

If you are not celebrating the anniversary of the day when America somehow saved the world from an alien FAILvasion using a computer virus then have an awesome Thursday instead.

Lats make this a reader participation thread: what are you guys up to these days? This is a question in X parts:

  • What game are you playing?
  • What book are you reading?
  • What shows are you watching?
  • What are you coding?
  • What other hobby are you indulging in right now?

I’m currently mostly playing DotA2. I think I have an untouched Hitman game somewhere in my Steam library so that will probably get installed and played next. I’m finishing up Only Forward which is an odd book but in a good way. I’m like two episodes behind on the new season of True Blood, and I think Dexter started last week so I will have to catch up on that too.

I’m not currently coding anything new other than maintenance of stuff, and work related crap. I’m also tinkering around with Warhammer (as you know) and have an idea for a coding project related to that, but it would be kinda big and therefore I’m sort of procrastinating and just throwing ideas around. How about you?

Currently I’m playing Lord of the Rings Online with the wife and Star Trek Online by myself.

I’ve been on an urban fantasy kick for a while now and I’m about half way through Aloha from Hell

    Continuum and Defiance.

Nothing currently. My current job doesn’t require much coding. Small scripts here and there, that’s about it. I should probably brush up on it really.

Cigar smoking. I bought a nice Cohiba last night to smoke later today.

A very tepid Thursday was had. :-|

Playing: Darksiders 2, which is like the comfort food of ARPGs. Also sifting through the mountain of games accumulated over multiple humble bundles in search of something interesting. An additional motive is to take stock of what I already own so I don’t re-buy too much in the coming sale season. (It turned out I owned four copies of Frozen Synapse from various bundles!)

Reading: Gave up on City And The City, now waiting for The Book of the new Sun to arrive. China Mieville’s writing completely fails to engage me, for some reason.

Watching: Shingeki No Kyojin, which begins as a no-punches-pulled brutal anime with an undercurrent of horror about a sequestered human race being slowly eaten by a race of giants. After ten episodes it rather disappointingly settles into a familiar Shonen mold–but it’s still easily the best anime released these past two years.

Coding: Trying and failing spectacularly to think in Common Lisp. Even just reading a twenty line implementation of a breadth first search drove me up a wall.

Other: Some occasional twiddling on an Ukulele, I guess.

I just recently completed Metro 2034 (really liked it), Mass Effect 3 (third time) and Mirrors Edge (Third time also :P)

Basically I am just focusing on Arma3. I have thought about playing CS:GO/Dota2 more, but I just haven’t found time to do it.

    No books or shows atm.

On coding side I started one 2d game-engine project (c++), no idea how that is going to end up. Also, I started working on my second Roguelike game, source for that one is here: https://github.com/LauriM/ProjectIce “Screenshot” of the progress can be found here: https://gist.github.com/LauriM/5768217

Game: I play Ruzzle with my wife on our phones :)

Reading: Listening to ‘Amped’…sci-fi alt. history about Google Gla….I mean neurological implants. Got a long commute so 95% of my ‘reading’ is audiobooks.

Shows: Dexter just started! Continum. Another year-ish wait for Game of Thrones. Wife and I just finished the entire Battlestar Galactica series a couple of weeks ago. Breaking Bad coming soon, I think!

Coding: Working on improving the editor function for Keepassc https://github.com/raymontag/keepassc

    Hobbies: see Coding ^^

    Games:
Well there’s a giant space war that involves tens of thousands of people in EVE online right now, so I’m mainly playing that. I’m proud to stand against space hitler that is our enemies leader.
I also bought New Vegas recently so I’ll be playing that when I have some time.
    Books:
I’m reading Revelation Space now, I rather like it so far.
    Shows:
I’m mostly watching anime now, but there’s also new Futurama episodes.

Playing: not really anything. Steam library is full o’ stuff as always, but I’m just not finding the time
Reading: not as often as I’d like, but Charles Stross – The Jennifer Morgue
Watching: Dexter and Futurama. Also have some Elementary and Mad Men to catch up on.
Coding: Just for work, writing perl scripts mainly.

My life is not supremely interesting to write about right now.

Games : None really, mainly crappy little ones on Android, and occasionally fire up the Xbox (CoD, Portal)

Books : Just started the Robin Hood Hacker Collection – not excellent, but an acceptable read I suppose.

Shows : Breaking Bad, and a few other daft things on Netflix – Jonathan Creek, Ultimate Force. I don’t really watch much TV

Coding : Currently playing with C++/SDL making crappy animations and simple games. Just basically trying to learn another style of coding. I’d like to move through to openGL and write some demoscene type programs (maybe without the strict size limits initially), just pretty pictures and music.

Other Hobbies : Music, playing around with a small home studio, writing/recording very bad music. Drinking (I think I can class that as a hobby). I’m also getting into photography more, just got my first dSLR. Work zaps most of my time, so I really struggle to get deeply involved in any hobby.

Games: nothing too much, though I did play a round of dominion today.

Books: I’ve just started “The Valley of Fear”

Shows: Dexter now that it has resumed

Coding: I’ve been working on and off on a library for real time open sound control message serialization and dispatching. This is by in large in an effort to fix up some horrors that lurk in the depths of some legacy code that I maintain. For work there is a lot of digital signal processing stuff getting codified.

Other Hobbies: I have a table with two half populated circuit boards for my modular synthesizer within a few feet of me now. That gets some of my time and cooking random things usually gets the rest.

Games: Don’t really play much anymore, but I’ve been playing Hitman Absolution on and off for the past two months. It’s definitely an okay game, but it’s not Hitman. I am disappoint.

Books: None. Last I read was Ender’s Game. Actually picked up a book on Zen Buddhism a couple of months ago, but I haven’t gotten to it yet.

Shows: Started watching How I Met Your Mother about a week ago, up to season 4 now. Pretty sure TV is my biggest obsession. Also following Continuum, Burn Notice, Game of Thrones, Warehouse 13, Falling Skies, Mock The Week, Futurama, Dexter, Graceland, and lots of others that I can’t remember this early in the morning.

Coding: Mostly working on home automation and my Pebble (<3) right now. Got light control figured out via TellStick, and music control because Sonos is awesome, and all (more or less) from my wrist.

Other: Piloted a Diamond DA20 last Tuesday and decided that I'm going to start taking flying lessons. Just gotta figure out some paper work and meet with a flight doctor now. It's gonna be awesome!

Games: Because of my moving to Greece, I am now playing mostly good old Oblivion. I only have this and Skyrim on my gaming rig, but Skyrim needs to be reinstalled, because it crashes all the time.
Books: I recently read Gilead and The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared. Both excellent books that I recommend.
Shows: I re-watch a couple of CSI-NY on the Greek TV. But since they have cancelled most public channels (including French TV5 Monde) to save money, there isn’t much to see in Greece any more.
    Coding: I don’t code, I test other people’s code… That’s not pretty.
Other: Learning Greek… It’s probably one of the most difficult languages in Europe… And the teacher sucks! :(

Currently playing Mount & Blade: Warband. A couple weeks ago it was Don’t Starve. I would be playing LoL, but my internet connection currently sucks.

I just finished Robert Jordan’s The Dragon Reborn, and now I’m moving on to The Shadow Rising.

I’m watching a little bit of Doctor Who, and a little bit of The Office.

Mostly doing Internship grunt work at a web development company.

My hobby is wishing I had a piano.

Game: Minecraft (Xbox version); wish I could play full pc version, but my best computer is pretty old and crappy.

Book: None; unfortunately, my wrist / elbow / shoulder problems are getting worse, and reading aggravates them pretty badly. :(

Watching: I still keep up with a couple of Geek & Sundry shows (Space Janitors, Tabletop mostly) and lots of the various offerings from Rooster Teeth. Also, and this is difficult to admit, but I’ve been watching Rules of Engagement on Netflix. Yeah, yeah.

Coding: Nada. Not part of my job, and I’ve been avoiding computer use as much as possible lately. Not even doing any “cool” projects at my job, though there’s a local college’s school of medicine that’s likely to occupy quite a bit of time (but not in a good way, more in a “you call these architectural drawings worthy of release?” way).

Hobby: Does physical therapy count as a hobby? I spend enough money on it… (high deductables suck). Mostly just the aforementioned Minecraft; using a wired controller (to get rid of that annoying and — to me — painful battery bulge in the back of the controller moves Xbox gaming from the “painful, only 15 minutes or so a day is possible” category to the “I can play for hours and not make things worse” category, which is awesome.
