Here is a little confession: today was the first time I watched [tag]Serenity[/tag]. Back in the day, I watched one and a half episodes of [tag]Firefly[/tag] when it was still on the air. What I saw was fairly random content that was completely out of context. The show was so highly hyped at the time that I had very high expectations. Since it did not blow my socks off in the first 5 minutes, I felt quite disappointed. I gave up on the show and decided to move on. When Serenity came out in the theaters I really didn’t care much for it. I never even gave it a chance.
Tday, I caught the [tag]movie[/tag] on [tag]HBO[/tag], and I have to say – my previous assumptions about Firefly were wrong. In fact, I could have not been more wrong about this! Serenity was awesome with capital A and capital wsome! I can honestly give it a ZOMG on the awesomeness scale. I plan to watch the whole series from beginning to the end when I get a chance.
If I ever talked shit about Firefly I want to take it back now.
My wife and I watched Firefly on DVD a couple of months back and loved it. It has some of the strongest dialogue and characterization of any TV series I’ve ever watched. We savored every minute and were bummed when we got to the end of the 11 episode series. But…
We still had reason to be excited because we hadn’t seen Serenity and we knew we had 2 more hours to spend with Captain Reynolds and crew. So I bought it on Amazon. And it sucked big time. It was a very pale (almost translucent) imitation of the TV series. For us they completely ditched all of the good will they had built up for these characters during the series. I can’t tell you how disappointed we were with this film.
That being said, since you liked Serenity but hadn’t seen much of the series you may end up loving the series even more than the movie because you saw Serenity first. Or you’ll absolutely hate the series because it’s the polar opposite of the film.
Heh – interesting. I was not aware that there was such a difference between the movie and the series. I figured that since this was a stand-alone movie some of the things will be different.
Hmm… I guess I will have to test this theory by watching the series. :) I’m all for good dialog and character development so hopefully I will be please with it.
BTW, I was perusing the PVR listings for the upcoming week(s) and it appears that the Sci-Fi Channel is going to be showing all of the Firefly episodes consecutively one night. Let me know if you need to know the date and time.
Awesome! I need to check the TV listings. Knowing my luck it will be one of those daytime marathons and they will schedule it either when I’m at work all day or when I’m away. :|
The SciFi Firefly marathon starts Monday September 18 at 8am. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or bad thing for you. :-)
Thanks! Heh, it figures that they would put a marathon of a show that I want to watch during the time that I’m actually at work. Sigh…
