Reading Reviews

We all read reviews of games, movies, books and products quite frequently. The best reviews are the ones that try to be objective, unbiased, and thorough. After all, we mostly read them to find out more about a given product – not to be told what to think about it.

It is relatively easy to be objective when you are reviewing a good quality product. You praise it for the stuff it gets right, and point out its flaws as needed. But when the reviewed item is a total piece of garbage, often all the objectivity goes out the window.

After all, how can you objectively grade something that seems to contain countless flaws and has no redeeming qualities. So instead of providing fair and balanced coverage, reviewers often opt to creatively trash the product in some humorous way. The formula is simple – find the biggest issue, flaw or mistake you can, and then make a joke about it. Do it couple of times, and then add some witty conclusion and you have yourself a review.

Surprisingly this works – these biased reviews are extremely fun to read. They are amusing on many levels:

  1. the “ZOMG I can’t believe how stupid this product is!” level
  2. the “ZOMG I can’t believe the reviewer just said that!” level
  3. and of course, the “This product is so becoming the next internet meme!” level

Every time I see a page of reviews, or a review column in a magazine, I try to find the lowest rated items first. Cause you know you are likely to fine some comedy gold there.
