Holy fucking shit! I found a new one!
As far as I was concerned there were currently only two shows on TV worth my attention. They were Lost and Battlestar Galactica. Sadly, both of them are currently in between seasons. So I have been searching for another show that would entertain me in the meantime. And since there seemed to be a lot of buzz about Heroes lately I decided to check it out.

I know what you are thinking – isn’t this that show about the kids with super powers? How good can it be? I mean, they didn’t even license any superheroes from Marvel or DC – they are all, like generic and shit. I know, this is the same thing I was thinking. I mean, I don’t hate the super-hero genre. I go to see every single Marvel and DC licensed Hollywood movie out there. And I cry tears of bitter disappointment almost every single time. Sometimes, they get things right – sometimes they fail miserably. But it’s always exciting to see your favorite comic book heroes on the big screen.
But generic super hero show? Can’t be good… Just can’t. Right? Wrong, my friend! Abso-fucking-lutely wrong!
Yes, Heroes is a show about people with super powers. But it’s far from being a campy comic book romp that I expected it to be. It is a really a great show. I decided to watch just the pilot episode, and next thing I knew it was 3am in the morning, and I was on episode 5, contemplating if I should catch few hours of sleep before work, or watch another one. Last time something like this happened to me was when I started watching Lost.
If you are not watching Heroes, you need to go and get the pilot episode right now. Rent it, Netflicks-it or download it – whatever. Yes, go pirate it! By the time you watch it, you will be ordering the Season 1 boxed set anyway, so it really doesn’t matter.
Ok, stop reading this how. Do Ctrl+T, type in the address of your favorite Torrent site, hit Search and then type in “Heroes S01E01”. Go! I’ll wait. You really want to have it downloading in the background while you are reading the rest of this post.
What are the things that make great TV? There are several things that rank highly with me, and Heroes has it all. Good writing, mystery, suspense, exceptional acting and compelling characters that you actually care about. And surprisingly enough, despite the premise (let’s face it – super hero stories have been done to death), the show remains fresh and original.
It’s not about some super powered team a la X-men. The show is about ordinary people who discover strange, sometimes scary powers and are forced to deal with them. Some embrace them, some resent them, and some have their lives ruined. At the start none of the characters know each other but it seems that their destinies are intertwined, and they are all connected in some way. Add in a shadowy, anonymous serial killer targeting “heroes”, a mysterious organization that seems to track and kidnap powered people for unknown reasons, a cataclysmic doomsday scenario looming in the future and you kinda get what the show is all about. And there is plenty of suspense – in fact almost every episode ends in a mini-cliffhanger that keeps you guessing and wanting to see more.
Oh, and there is also Hayden:
Save the cheerleader, save the world! That’s how we roll.
Yes, I’m excited about this show. It’s one of the very few things on TV right now that I like. I still have long way to go before I’m all caught up. I’m currently around 12 episodes into the series, so please no spoilers in the comments.
If you post spoilers, I will find out where you live and kill you in your sleep!

My gosh! Call it a coincidence! I started to watch Heroes today as well. And you’re absolutely right about the pilot – it makes you wanna watch all of them in a row…
You know, besides Lost which forced me into the same, I’m also really enjoying Prison Break. The suspense and the cliffhangers are there too. Have you tried it?
How can you not watch Heroes!?! It’s in the second season already! :)
There are a few drama series that I follow too: Prison Break, Lost, Heroes and (surprise, surprise) Numb3rs. I used to follow CSI, but after Quentin Tarantino directed the 2-hour finale for Season 5, I lost the spark for it somehow.
Yeah, Hayden’s my bright spark for now too. She’s one hell of a hot babe. :D
@Ricardo – lol! Great minds think alike!
I haven’t seen prison break, but the premise didn’t seem that interesting to me. Then again, neither did the premise of heroes so who knows. I might check it out. :P
@Muhammad – I watch Lost and BSG. I used to be a big Farscape fan as well.
I was never really a fan of CSI and simillar shows. They just didn’t do much for me.
Hmmm.. a few weeks earlier and you might have enticed me, but now South Park, Family Guy and The Simpsons have all started up again, coupled with my backlog of umm.. legally obtained movies, means I have just under 4 solid days worth of video to watch.
Actually you still might have tempted me to add it to the pile :?
@Matt` – well, heroes is very different from South Park and Family Guy. But, if you liked Lost, chances are that you will love Heroes as well. It has simillar degree of mystery/suspense and character driven plot. The main difference is that Heroes doesn’t pile mystery upon mystery, and it does resolve good deal of them when appropriate.
I might give this a try – I’m only watching two series’ at the moment (Robin Hood and Desperate Housewives), and eagerly waiting for 24 (which you should start watching; S07 starts on Jan 13th) :D
After watching the first episode, I also found myself several episodes into the series in the early hours of the morning – it looks like it’s a pretty good show so far :D
Heh! See, I told you!
It’s even better when you watch it with someone else. This way you can discuss and speculate as you go without getting spoiled. :)
I want so much to start watching Heroes, but am so afraid it’s going to get stupid and then cancelled right when I start getting into it. I am determined to only buy or rent the seasons DVDs once the series is “over”…and only if it ends with a proper resolution. I was an avid Lost watcher but got worried this thing would never end. Now, as with Heroes, will wait. :)
I finished Season 1 in the small hours this morning, so I’ll be starting Season 2 this evening :D
@Steve – I’m almost done with Season 1 and so far the show is amazing. Naturally I can’t guarantee that it won’t fizz out and loose it’s magic in Season 2 but judging from the quality of writing and storytelling so far you’d think that the writers would rather end the series on a strong note than drag it out.
@Fr3d – I’m on episode 21 right now. I’m trying to go in sync with my cousin. We usually watch it on her big HD-TV or if we can’t watch it together we agree on which episodes to watch ahead so that we can discuss them later.
So I’m actually going slower than I normally would because of this. :)
i read a lot about heroes and i was looking for torrents, but copuldnt find them….can someone help me with an tracker for example…? : )
@milos: Where are you searching for torrents? The episodes of this show are all over mininova, piratebay and sumo torrent. Seriously, go to one of these sites, type in “heroes” and you should get dozens of results.
