Bush Hid the Facts

Here is a nifty trick that you can try at home:

  1. find a WinXP box near you
  2. open notepad
  3. type in the exact phrase: bush hid the facts
  4. don’t press enter, and save the file
  5. open the file with notepad
  6. gawk with amazement

Try it! I dare you! I double dare you! If it doesn’t work, you’re probably doing it wrong or you are not on winxp platform.

Apparently this is a weird bug that makes Notepad to mess up the encoding for some files that have exactly 15 alphanumeric characters and 4 spaces in the pattern of hhhh hhh hhh hhhhh. In fact this very line will produce the same result. Another one that works is Bill fed the goats.

      Really? Why?

I use EditPlus on my windows box but I never realy bothered purging notepad even though I never use it.

Did you ever open binary file in notepad? That’s how it looks when you open the bush file.

I can’t stand notepad - It can’t handle files with only CR *or* LF, it can only do them in Windows encoding, which uses CR&LF.

I use EditPad Pro for editing everything… txt, php, css, html, sql, java, xml… and more )

I removed notepad because I used to use EditPad Lite, and I had replaced the notepad exe file with the editpad lite exe… But I can’t do the same thing with EP Pro, so I just left it without any notepad D

I never really replaced the exe - I just associate all the file types with my alternate editor. But yeah - I can see how that would happen. Heh…

Btw, isn’t notepad.exe in the list of protected core files? If it is, you may be able to restore it by running sfc or something like that…
