Fuck IE7!

Hey, did you hear that IE7 was finally released?

No? Cause I did, about 78 million times today. Next Mircosoft fanboi who decides to tell me the good news will die a horrible painful death - I promise!

You see, the thing is that I really do not give a flying fuck about IE7. Please wake me up in couple of years when it becomes the #1 browser so I can stop writing ugly hacks to make web pages work for IE6, and start writing slightly less ugly IE7 hacks.* In the meantime however I’m gonna stick with Firefox for my daily browsing needs. I’m really glad that Microsoft finally got the message, and decided to slightly improve compliance, and add features such as tabbed browsing, RSS integration, and search. It’s about time. But again, why should I care? It’s not like I’m gonna use that thing for anything else than testing my css and layouts.

Judging from what Firefox 2.0 has to offer, IE7 is already obsolete anyway. But hey, whatever floats your boat… Just don’t forget to patch it right away before you browse, cause you may catch something nasty.

* - It appears that Microsoft will push IE7 as a mandatory windows update before the end of the year, so make that few months instead of years.

Like that’s ever going to happen P

I’m not even going to bother testing my pages in IE6 or 7… Firefox FTW! D

Well, it will eventually become the norm. When Vista finally rolls out, most new computers will have it preinstalled by default. At some point the number of vista installations will reach critical mass for web designers, and application makers to require it.

Think about how many things right now require IE6 to work properly - some software actually ships with IE6 nowadays because they rely on some libraries that are bundled with it. The same thing will happen to IE7. It will slowly gain market share till it becomes dominant.

In the meantime though, fuck it. mrgreen

I kinda have to test in IE because 99% of my user base is to dumb to figure out what firefox is even though each company laptop comes preinstalled with it. Most people are just to afraid to click on that “fox fire” icon even when I explain to them that this is a better, more secure browser… eh…

a good trick for that is to remove all IE icons and give firefox the IE icon -P
most of your “dumb” users won’t even see the difference -)

      Heh… But that’s kinda cheating. P

Besides, our sucky time/expense tracking system is IE only, and uses ActiveX for everything. If you log into it in Firefox, you bassically see a blank page with an array of disorganized iframes. It’s a piece of shit, and we are currently shopping for a replacement - but for the time being they need to use it daily.

So I would have to set up the IE Tab extension on each of the computers, and make sure that our time tracking system always opens using IE rendering engine…

Fr3d it appears that it will happen soooner than we think. Check this out:

The long-awaited next version of Microsoft’s browser software will be pushed out as an automatic update a “few weeks” later, probably as part of Microsoft’s regular Patch Tuesday update cycle in either November or December. Firms not ready to install IE7 will be able to temporarily block the update.

      source.

The IEBlog says the same thing.

I’m not looking forward to dealing with all of the whining people who are going to call me when the change is made. I work with a lot of people who are going to be very annoyed when this change happens, and haven’t lifted a finger to see if their sites are going to have any trouble. I think I’m going to take a few days off, starting on the day this changeover happens.

I’m coding a new theme for my blog…and well IE6 and 7 require a user agent hack to display two different CSS files one for normal browsers and one for IE. It’s fucking annoying and pathetic.
