Nothing says you are cool more than carrying a brown brick in your pocket.

No matter what the fanboi’s say, it’s not as good as iPod.

People are going to BUY one of those? I wouldn’t want one, even if it was free.

I’ll stick to my still-functional 20GB 3G iPod for now (until I can get a new one) :D

That’s the thing, iPod’s are much nicer all around. Who care about the Wifi feature – it’s useless anyway, since the files you transfer can only be played 3 times…

Have you seen what the people behind Zune think of those of us who use I-pods? I wasn’t interested in a Zune before, now I’m a little hostile towards them.

Yeah, I saw that. It’s a stupid idea, because an iPod is as much of a repository for stolen music as a CD or a hard drive.

I can’t figure out if this is a brilliant or dumb move for MS though. On one hand, they set themselves up for extortion. Now, every time they release a multimedia related product they will have people banging on their door asking for blood money saying:

“How come you’re not gonna pay us? You paid for Zune! No media for you until you cough up the piracy tax!”

On the other hand this creates an exact same situation for all other makers of multimedia devices. Apple of course can tell RIAA to go suck on it and get away with it, but it may become very hard for new device makers to enter the market. So this will leave Zune and iPod the only contenders left standing.

And then MS can just keep tossing buckets of Vista money at the Zune, selling it at loss and trying out-wait Apple.

Microtard, with their typical playground bully tactic, try to muscle into a market already saturated with good stuff (sandisk is the best competitor to iPod) and piss off all their putative playsforshit partners. Way to go Microtwat!

hey! that’s nailed my flag to the lanyard (or similar metaphor) – identified as a Safari using Mac OS X sluggard – don’t look at me. I’m boring. (bozos)

that last is a very niche uk-centric bbc3 allusion.

Ha! Zune? The Zune is nothing special…I actually have one and I am in the process of selling it for an iPod Video. As diskgrinder said, M$ is the type of company that goes into the market after many markets have successfully captured it. Sony Playstation is a great example of that. After over a decade of providing great consoles to consumers, Microsoft decided to jump in the bangwagon. Windows itself is another example. Many many many more companies have been creating OS’s long before Windows. Again, as M$ and their bullying tactics, they decided to take the OS market away. The Zune is the most recent example. Not only do they make the product under the Microsoft name, they market it like no tomorrow trying it to shove it up to people’s throat.

I, myself, will be buying an iMac, iPod, and many more Apple products. I seriously can never use a Microsoft product without it being reliable. Microsoft will never get things right.

Agreed. That said, PS3 is the laughing stock of the console world. Sony was the leader in the market. Playstation used to be THE platform of choice for serious gamers and developers. And somehow they managed to let all of that slip, and let Microsoft and Nintendo completely overtake them. PS3 is the Zune of the gaming market, and Xbox 360 seems to be the king at the moment. Not thanks to Microsoft of course – they just got lucky.

But I agree with everything else – MS always tries to enter existing markets that have proven over time to provide good revenues, and then tries to throw their weight around. Don’t quote me on this, but I read somewhere that MS didn’t really make any profit on the original Xbox – the slashed the prices so badly to compete with Sony and Nintendo that it was a huge money sink. But they could afford it because the huge profit margins on sales of Windows and Office. Again, I don’t have the source so this might be BS. But so I’ve heard.

And supposedly this is the same with Zune. They are just pumping money into it, hoping that they can steal enough of Apple’s market to make this whole thing profitable.

    I disagree:

    – wraps DRM over all the files you put on it
    – wifi is a copout (3 days or 3 plays is a joke)
    – won’t work with Linux
    – brown
    – was made by microsoft

No, thank you – I’d rather just get an iPod.

    – so what i don’t see any wifi ipods
    – linux is the real joke
    – it comes in other colors
    – microsoft made xbox. kapeesh

I think i’ll stick with my zune.

    1. If it’s wrapped in DRM it’s no longer your file. Microsoft graciously allows you to use it… For now. I object DRM on a philosophical and moral level. Any company that employs DRM technology essentially tells you that it considers you a thief that needs to be punished. I do not want to give them my money.

Yes, Apple does use DRM, and this is why I will never use iTunes. But at least I can take the songs that I own or ripped of the ipod and put it on another machine. Zune won’t let you do that.

    2. Wifi thing is a tease feature. They hype it as if it was the best thing since the sliced bread. But it does nothing useful. There is really no real benefit of having – it’s a novelty feature at most.

    3. Wrong blog for this. I probably spend more time in Linux than I spend in windows. It happens to be my primary work tool, and also my passion. I have a single WinXP machine that I use for gaming. All the other computers I own or maintain run Linux. It’s certainly not a joke to me. It might be a joke to you, but why would I buy an accessory that won’t work with most of the machines I use?

    4. I know. Failed attempt at a humorous comment I guess.

    5. It also made Windows. So what? I already pay the Windows tax in order to get access to good PC games. This doesn’t change the fact that they are a convicted monopolist. I don’t want to give them my money if I don’t have to. This is why I don’t own an Xbox. I’d rather choose the lesser evil and give my money to Apple, or some other mp3 player maker rather than line the pockets of Microsoft so that they can bribe more foreign comities in an attempt to certify their broken, un-usable OOXML standard.

Also, Xbox 360 is doing so well mainly because Wii is aimed at casual gaming and doesn’t have the next-gen hardware, and Sony totally dropped the ball on PS3. So by a fluke it is the only console platform on the market that has the user base and features that mainstream game development studios are looking for.

Cause I usually always keep at least 1 machine with at home for gaming. And it usually happens to be the one at my desk, with the comfy chair, nice mouse and keyboard so I’m comfortable. And… I’m currently sitting at my desk, so – windows.

I haven’t been following the Zune2 news but hey – maybe MS learned on their mistakes, and will do a better job this time. Anyway, Apple is back on my shit list for bricking people’s iPhones. :P
