OpenSolaris seems to be doing the same kind of promotion Ubuntu has been doing for a while now – they will ship you nice, original installation CD’s free of charge.
These ship with not only Solaris Express, but also 3 open source projects based on the OpenSolaris code. The one I’m especially curious about is Nexenta OS which can be described as a cross between Ubuntu and Solaris. The system runs on a OpenSolaris kernel and Linux based user land apps ported over from Ubuntu. It should be interesting to test drive it on a Live CD.
You can also get the non-open Solaris for free if you want to. Sun will send you a free Solaris 10 DVD kit if you ask them nicely. Thanks for the tip Craig!

Hmmm . . . I never played with Nexenta. Looks like they are running BrandZ in a container for all the Linux apps. Pretty cool! I wouldn’t do much in the container since I am already used to living in Solaris land, but this might be the hurdle needed to get back all the former Solaris people. I keep hearing Linux dweebs tell me Sun is dead and Solaris will never be able to regain their market share . . . we shall see.
Nah, Solaris is far from dead. They are still innovating, and doing interesting stuff with the system – like ZFS and etc…
I haven’t got my email yet, after registering last night… I even asked them to re-send the confirmation link… :(
I got mine. Check your spamfilter and add starterkits <at> opensolaris dot org to your whitelist.
Or if you ordered the Solaris 10 kit, they will send a confirmation from no-reply <at> sun dot com.
:)
I haven’t had either of those emails, and I did check my spamfilter :p
I think there’s something up with my mail server though, so I’m checking that out.
Fixed my server, got the email, now I just have to wait 2-4 weeks for my DVDs to come :D
Awesome! :)
Thanks for the info – lucky to have digged your post.
Any of you got the kit yet?
Nope. I didn’t get anything yet. They did say 3-4 weeks though, so I guess it’s still early. :)
