My New Stick

I bought a new memory stick. I kinda did it on a whim – I saw a tiny 2GB one on amazon for $14 so I just bought it. I got it in today, and it is actually even smaller than I expected. It’s essentially the size of a stick of Trident Gum:

New Flash Memory Stick

It’s amazing how easy is to hide this thing somewhere. I think this would be a perfect vector for smuggling some top secret data out of a top secret facility. ;)

I lined it up against some of my old flash memory sticks and took this picture:

Flash Memory Size Comparison

The big black one with the strap is an old 64 MB device that came with my Dell laptop back in the dark ages. The silver one is 256 MB. You can see that it is really worn down from being carried in my pocket all the time. The new one looks really flimsy and brittle next to these two.

I’m kinda afraid that I will break it or loose it. I put the strap on it so that I don’t forget to pull it out of the machine after use. I plopped it in my wallet for safe keeping. I’m kinda afraid to carry it in my pocket – it looks like it could break easily.

    Oooh nice :D

I just bought myself a new 1GB U3 drive, but I might have to get one of those too – you can never have enough storage (or pen stick drive things) :)

Funny thing is that I noticed that I don’t use these as much as before. Nowadays I tend do ssh stuff from one machine to another rather than moving it on a stick. :P

I feel embarrassed that I bought a 1Gb stick for $59 in November 2005 … and thinking I was getting such a deal. And I still haven’t gotten rid of all the 32Mb sticks I have lying around the den. I’ll be giving them to the dog to play with next. :(

Yeah, it’s amazing how much cheaper these things got recently. Of course there is still plenty of overpriced crap out there too. I bet there are still people buying 1GB sticks for $59 right now. :|

    I still have a 256MB stick which costed 95€ or something :( …
This was in the beginning of 2004 somewhere.

But it was better than the 20Mb diskspace my school offered to the IT students :/

The 256 MB stick cost me $25 back when I bought it, and at the time I was thinking I was getting an awesome deal. :P

Yep, you totally have the US flag next to your name. I’m guessing they have some point-to-point VPN setup or something like that.

I heard this is how American geeks on business trips in China bypass the “Great Firewall” – they just VPN to their office in US and use that as their gateway. :P
