Anyone Up for a game of Chess?
Not sure if this is going to work, but let’s give it a try. Let’s play collective chess. The rules are simple - copy the chessboard below into the comment field, and update it with your move:

There is no rule checking, so be honest. Here is how I envision the game to go:
- First commenter should post a move with the black pieces
- Second commenter should post a move with white pieces
- Alternate until check-mate
- Once you posted a move with black, you must wait for someone to post another with white and vice versa
- You can switch sides at any time as long as it doesn’t violate rule #4
- If two moves for the same side are posted concurrently, the two authors should discuss the moves agree which should be the “official” one.
This might either be fun, a complete un-playable mess, of a failure. But I guess we will never know until we try. Please let me know if the font’s don’t look correctly in some browsers. As far as I know these are legal Unicode characters, so they should display in any browser that supports Unicode.
Disclaimer: I totally suck at chess.
If you don’t see the chess pieces, here is what you do. Open your MS Office setup, and choose to change your installation. Click whatever check box they have to allow you to install custom features. Now from the list of components choose:
Office Shared Features -> International Support -> Universal Font
Choose “Run from my computer”.
Alternatively download Arial Unicode MS font and drop it into your Fonts folder. You might need to restart Firefox to see the effect.

Jake - I’m sitting at Ubuntu right now, and the chessboard looks just fine. Maybe you need to install the MS Fonts package? What distro do you use?
On ubuntu it’s the msttcorefonts package in Universe.

@Luke: I have the MS Fonts installed, but not as my default fonts anywhere. The font I am using makes everything look slightly out of alignment. For instance, the ∟’s are slightly off from the ♟’s. It doesn’t really matter too much though. The pre didn’t help for me either, I just thought I’d give it a go.

I thought it would be less confusing if we would also state our move below the board. This way we can avoid the painful mental diff between the last two chessboards to determine what exactly changed. This is only going to get more confusing as the board gets more chaotic.
Just in case you are not familiar with how the chessboard is marked, the bottom right corner is a1, and the top left corner is h8 - as per algebraic chess notation. So the black king is at e1.

Its spread to one of your commenters above but that’s a start if one of his (?) readers takes it up who knows? or another reader of yours who doesn’t comment. Viral phenomena on the net kinda interest me the way it spreads and actually what spreads.
