Ok, it’s time for a silly little game/competition once again! How do you participate?
- Figure out your external IP address (ie. the routable one you get from your ISP, not the NAT address you get from the router).
- Your IP address is composed of 4 octets divided by dots. Take the octets and add them together. This is your sum.
- Take the sum, and divide it by 4. This is your average.
Post your sum and average in the comments below. Person with the highest average and/or sum wins the intenet.
If you are lazy, I implemented a tiny script that will do this for you. Simply peek into the iframe below:
For privacy reasons, please don’t post your actual IP. No need to anouce it to the whole world. Also note that I can see your IP when you post your comment so no cheating. I will be checking it! ;) Oh, and if you roam between various IP addresses during the day, you can post once for each of them – maybe your work IP is better than your home one.
Let me start. My average is 109.75 and my sum is 439. What is yours?
[tags]ip address, ip, ip fun, magic ip average, magic ip sum[/tags]
639 sum, 159.75 average (I am teh winnar! so far!)
hmm… I could just reboot my router and see if I score higher.. but then again that would involve getting up and walking over to my router, and also some downtime while it’s coming back online.
I can’t beat Matt’ s score above but my sum is 489 and average 122.25.
Oddly enough I read this blog entry in Liferea and opening it there opened your script (ipfun.php) in firefox.
I’m second (for now)
Total: 622
Avg: 155.5
Maybe i’ll reboot my router tomorrow and check it again.
I’m a sissy …
MIPS: 378
MIPA: 94.5
Oh well at least I win at losing.
My “score” from work:
MIPS: 435
MIPA:108.75
MIPS = 618
MIPA = 154.50
My results from work:
MIPS: 438
MIPA: 109.50
Which is oddly close to my home score. I’m guessing it’s because it’s the same ISP. :P
I wonder what would be the maximum score possible considering the reserved blocks and etc. Anyone knows this of the top of their head?
665 and 166
Denmark ftw!
Sum: 682
Average: 170.50
Not bad for a school IP address in class ;)
@Starhawk – btw, that’s odd. The correct behavior for browsers and apps that do not implement iframes would be to display the following text:
I guess Liferea has an odd way of handling iframe tags.
Looks like at home I can get one of the lowest “scores” too:
Sum: 122
Average: 30.50
How about Hi/Low IP Poker? My average is 56.75.
@ work now…
Sum: 518
Average: 129.5
:P
MIPS: 405
MIPA: 101.25
That’s one of my work IPs
You’re too nice Luke :
Odd I suppose one could say, but more accurate would be buggy ass behavior. I had noticed it before as one web sites I read there open up ads in FF. Since I’m not using the current version, the bug might in fact be fixed (one can hope after all). I still use dapper and the most recent version of liferea is not in the repos yet. I installed Liferea using apt and see no real reason to manually update it… the iframe thing is only a very minor inconvenience. in time hopefully it will be in the repos. Anyway here in a few months I’m buying another hard drive and upgrading Ubuntu and hopefully ditching Win 2000 and upgrading it to Win XP pro. As much as I hate Windows I still use IMVU and for now it only works in WIndows :(
MIPS 509
MIPA 127.5
If addresses were random, you’d expect a MIPS of 512 and a MIPA of 128. Mine is very close to that, but the last octet probably has an average lower than 128 (since ISPs typically fill out the bottom of the range before moving up). I wonder what the real average is
@Starhawk – I’m using dapper too. I wouldn’t hold my breath for the newest version though. In most cases the newest versions of software are usually packaged for the current distribution, and sometimes backported to the previous one. For example, Firefox is still at version 1.5 on Dapper and I don’t think that’s going to change.
@jambrama – good point, though there are chunks of IP space that are reserved which probably affects the average in some ways.
My sum = 554 and average = 138.50
My Sum:458
My Average:114.50
darn! guess the danes got it better than us swedes;
Sum: 574
Avg: 143.50
otoh being a swede is a whole lot funnier considering the real meaning of the word (please note that funnier is used in its widest possible sense, and is not analogous to “more fun”, considering being stuck underground most of your life seems pretty boring):
Swede
Root of Brassica rutabaga or Swedish turnip; called rutabaga in the USA. A 150-g portion is a rich source of vitamin C; a source of vitamin B1; provides 4.5 g of dietary fibre; supplies 15 kcal (60 kJ).
I guess Mazro is winning so far. :P
@ACK – lol, I never really considered the word Swede in this way.
Heh, at least Pole can be interpreted in many ways. It can be either magnetic or used by strippers. :P
Seemingly average my MIPS is 451 and my MIPA is 112.75. While reading this post in Tiny Tiny RSS, the iframe just displayed as a 404 error. Probably didn’t fetch the php correctly.
Sum = 753
Average = 188.25
Mean: 107.75
Sum: 431
It looks like I’ll have to try this elsewhere next chance I get. Sadly, about everyone uses the same ISP around here.
On my free shell account, I got slightly better.
Mean: 126.75
Sum: 507
Still not winning. Oh well.
On a side note, it’s a pain to see the anti-spam word in elinks from a shell. I had to save the image into my public html directory and then go and view it.
Hey Luke, this is quite late but I’ve been travelling and only now I had the time to update myself reading your posts. ;-)
This comment here is just because my sum and average are quite high:
sum = 695
average = 173.75
From what I’ve read, I got second place!
And by the way, Im in a hostel here that only has the lame IE 6. Ugh!
A hostel? Uh… I hope it’s not like the one in that movie where they kill everyone. :P
Hmmm I get to be one of the lowest..
Total: 181
Average: 45.25
