I’m so tempted to reply to one of those and make fun of them! But I’m kinda scared that if I do Mr. Ecko is going to show up at my house and kick my ass.

From:LadyRita Mosley.
4 Old Church Street,
Chelsea, SW3,
England.

Here writes Lady Rita Mosley, suffering from cancerous ailment. I am married to Sir David Mosley an Englishman who is dead. My husband was into private practice all his life before his death. Our life together as man and wife lasted for three decades without child. My husband died after a protracted illness. My husband and I made a vow to uplift the down-trodden and the less-privileged individuals as he had passion for persons who can not help themselves due to physical disability or financial predicament.

I can adduce this to the fact that he needed a Child from this relationship, which never came.

I didn’t even know that adduce was a word. Apparently it means to provide evidence for [source]. I’m totally gonna use it from now on. In fact, I’m going to use it in a sentence right now:

Dear Sir and/or Madam, can you please adduce that you are a rich english lady and not some dude from Nigeria?

How do you provide evidence that he needed a child anyway? I kinda needed to pee like an hour ago, but I don’t think I could adduce for that.

And , if you don’t mind me asking, why the hell do you spell child with capital C? Are you just capitalizing Random words in your Letter for fun, or is it some clever new technique to bypass spam filters?

When my late husband was alive he deposited the sum of Twenty Million Pounds (20,000,000.00 Million Great Britain Pounds Sterling)which were derived from his vast estates and investment in capital market with his bank here in UK. Presently, this money is still with the Bank. Recently, my Doctor told me that I have limited days to live due to the cancerous problems I am suffering from.

Though what bothers me most is the stroke that I have in addition to the cancer. With this hard reality that has befallen my family, and me I have decided to donate this fund to you and want you to use this gift which comes from my husbands effort to fund the upkeep of widows, widowers, orphans, destitute, the down-trodden, physically challenged children, barren-women and persons who prove to be genuinely handicapped financially.

So you have a stroke? Are you having it right now? Is it like a continuous, never ending stroke or something? Man, that must suck considering you also have cancerous problems.

I took this decision because I do not have any child that will inherit this money and my husband relatives are bourgeois and very wealthy persons and I do not want my husband hard earned money to be misused or invested into ill perceived ventures. I do not want this money to be misused hence the reason for taking this bold decision. I am not afraid of death hence I know where I am going. I do not need any telephone communication in this regard due to my deteriorating health and because of the presence of my husband relatives around me. I do not want them to know about this development.

And also, I’m pretty sure I could discern between an British and Nigerian accent. Not even mentioning the fact that you are a dude, not a lady. So yes, we definitely don’t need telephone communication in this regard.

As soon as I receive your reply I shall give you the contact of the bank in UK. I will also issue you a Letter of Authority that will empower you as the original beneficiary of this fund. My happiness is that I lived a life worthy of emulation. Please assure me that you will act just as I have stated herein. Hope to hear from you soon.

Anyone who actually believes that some English widow with a perpetual cancerous stroke is just going to give them 20 mill totally deserves what is coming to them.

Oh how I laughed when I received another lame 419 mail.

If “Lady Rita Mosley” actually exists – which I doubt – it’s most unusual in modern written English to begin your mail with ‘Here writes…’. Indeed, I’ve never known anyone to start a mail or letter that way. Describing terminal cancer as “an ailment” is interesting too: it’s a disease!

Point of order to the scammers: if you intend to scam those in the UK who have a pretty good working knowledge of written English, try to ensure your mails actually read properly. One would presume that the wife of a peer of the realm would know how to write a letter and starting it with “here writes” is not cricket!

As we say on the football terraces “You’re not very good, you’re not very good. In fact you’re FUCKING SHIT!” so kindly fuck off and stop bothering us with your phoney-baloney scam mails.

Manuel – apparently some people still fall for it. I figure that if it was not working they would have stopped doing it. Sigh…

Oh, and getting email addresses is easy. You write a simple perl script using www::mechanize that will crawl along the links and then do a quick regexp to match everything that looks like an email.

They you just let it loose on a site that has lots of links (ie. digg.com for example). So every time you type in your address on the web in plain text, you risk it being spidered by spammers.

This is why your email address does not show up next to your name when you post comments here. I don’t want spammers to get your infos.

Leah! This is a well known scam. They call it the Nigerian 419 scam after the legal code for this kind of fraud in Nigeria. Just google for 419 scam and you will see hundreds of pages dealing with it.

Note – these people are usually relatively harmless, because most of these scams are run from Nigeria and other African 3’rd world countries – mostly because they do not have the infrastructure in place to track down, capture and prosecute or extradite these people.

Just ignore their future emails from now on. Good luck!

Sorry but online petitions do not work.

Also, the internets do not like sad stories of hardship. If you want people to rally behind you, you need to either make them laugh or make them angry. Viral advertising is the way to go.

Your cause must become a cultural icon that can produce “___ has a posse” stickers, youtube spoofs and etc… Otherwise you are drowned out in the sea of scam.

But that’s just my opinion. Internet is disgusting in more way than one – but that’s why I love it. :)

I am presently lying on my dying bed,as a barren mother if i would put it that way,i have no kids and all my relatives are way too dubious and i believe if this funds is passed to them,it would be used for their selfish interests.

i didn’t fall for it either , i too played a long they even sent me pictures of a lady in her death bed and a certificate of the actual so called 20,000,000gbp
then a bank got a hold of me to let me know that i needed to pay 1200pds(2000us$)
so i sent the so called lawyer if someone is to inherit the money why lady rita mosley didn’t care of it her self.? so his reply was she died before she could.
so i figure i would write one more email and told him if someone would have inherrited that kind of money it would have been i a will, already in the bank for , and the legally papers would not have mispelled words. and that the banks email address would have worked.
then i told them i know this was a scam and it was all over the inernet.

    Beware!!!!!!!
    Dear _______,
I hope that you are fine.

It is with heavy heart that i bring to your immediate notice the demise of my client Mrs Rita Mosley in the early hours of this morning.

I want you to take the news of her eventual demise with a strong heart knowing that she lived a life worthy of emulation,as all who knew her were favoured by her kindheartedness.

I write to advice you based on my discussion with the Administrative officer at the Bank this morning when i informed him of her demise.

You must be already aware of the high rise in money laundering and terrorist activities in the world today which has brought about strict scrutiny and investigations by monetary bodies especially of financial transactions involving such huge sums both locally and internationally, also putting into consideration the fact that my client is dead there is need to transfer this funds immediately to you as desired by Lady Mosley.

In a bid to ensure the success of this transaction,i decided to inquire from the Bank as to the most convenient and fast way to transfer the 20,000,000.00 GBP from Mrs Mosley’s account to you now that she is dead and some relatives of her late husband whom are very boigous and desperate would want to take this chance and have a hold of this funds.

The administrative officer suggested that you open a fresh non-rescident offshore account in your name with the Bank,so that the transfer would be seen as an inhouse transfer and as such would not attract the attention of Englands inland revenue board and some strict monetary bodies that supervises the transfer of such huge funds internationally.

So that once your new account has been successfully opened and activated, then the funds can easily be transfered to your account with the Bank within the next 48 hours.

In this regard, you are expected to contact the Bank immediately and secure the account as soon as possible, afterwards the funds would be transfered hitchfree to the new account in your name here in UK.
You would now begin to transfer this lump sum in smaller bits to your account in your place of parmanent rescidence.

Here is the contact details of the Bank.

    CONTACT PERSON:
    Mr.Oliver Bullak
    Accounts Manager,
    ROYAL DUBLIN FINANCE PLC.
    EMAIL: accounts@royal-dublin-finance.com
    TEL:+44-709-465-6839
    FAX:+44-870-478-1362

Do well to provide the new account information to me once you have successfully opened the account so that we may proceed with the transfer.

I hope that i have informed you correctly and i expect that you would act exactly as directed.

I await to hear positively from you in this regard as soon as possible.

    Warm Regards,
    Barr Marcucci F.

Just a side note for anyone who ever considering sending their info in response to an email like that:

The reason why transactions that involve so much money are never done is because email is inherently insecure. Whenever you send an email, you send it in plain text, and unencrypted and generally travels over many different hoops before it reaches it’s destination. And anyone at any of those hoops can read it.

Sending your account number via email is like yelling it across a crowded room. Chances are that no one cares enough to write it down – but then again, you never know.

I had a thought today, to look up his name or Lady Rita Moseleys. I now know what a fool I have been. I did not send them any money, nor did I go ahead with the transaction. Apparently these people are fairly educated, and I use the term fairly, loosely. I am so glad I looked this stuff up. I might have been duped, just because I am a caring person. God has a way of using people and I have never met you before I sincerely believed in my heart that getting in contact with you is divine and I pray to God to guild you in the execution of the project. I took this decision because I don’t have any child that will inherit this money and my husband’s relatives are trouble makers and gold diggers and I don’t want my husband’s efforts to be used for trivialities. I do not want a situation where my husband’s sweat will be used in material pursuits. This is why I am taking this decision.
