Find Your Shared Server Neighbors

As you may or may not know, I’m on shared hosting. This means that the box located somewhere in the deep caverns of Dreamhost data center is not only home to this site, but also bunch of other sites. I always wondered who are my server neighbors. It turns out it’s relatively easy to find this out.

Yesterday I stumbled upon Jon Lee’s post on this very topic. He recommended using myIPNeighbors service. So I popped over there, and found that I might be sharing my box with 11 other websites:

  1. allergytest.co.uk
  2. batalion.com
  3. db48x.net
  4. deadlegs.com
  5. dev.gobeerme.com
  6. dev.kungfudiscomonkey.net
  7. eschatologist.net
  8. firecontrolcms.com
  9. matburt.net
  10. mediatank.co.uk
  11. wikier.org

Microsoft Live Search seems to confirm this. I see the same number of sites popping up in there also. Interesting stuff.

Of course, as Jon mentioned in his post, this is not an exact science. The fact that we share an IP, doesn’t necessarily mean that we share a box. But it is possible.

So if any of these links generates a trackback on your site, and you are intrigued to find out more about your neighbors, email me or leave me a comment. Let me know if you are also sitting on popcorn, or perhaps on a different server, and the shared IP is just a coincidence.

Maybe we can all sit in circle and complain how slow this box got lately, or maybe link to each other to display some sort of server solidarity or server pride.

Heh, Travis and I share with a few other sites (89). Some of these are subdomains.

Yep. I was looking for a good ISP and Travis recommended them to me. Actually worked out well.

Who hosts you? I’m on dreamhost.

Hehe – and I bet it still works. It’s kinda what Shamus from Twenty Sided did. His CAPTCHA is always the same: d20.

This is where I got the plugin from BTW. I saw Shamus talking about it, so I went and installed it here to replace the buggy filosofo thing.

I run around 20 subdomains on my site…

We both run on FusedNetwork (best host period, i have written many reviews for them)

They do look good. I get more space, and bandwidth here at dreamhost, but they do have a bad track record with uptime as you may have noticed. :)

I’m bookmarking fused for future reference.

  8. and if you *DO* switch please let met know becuase unless cbetts really wants to claim that he convinced you to switch… I owe them 75 dollars right now…. and he has let me keep my website up for the pas about 20 days and i haven’t payed. I keep brining him clients he will keep letting me roll while I try to scrape up money.

Also he used to have this cool package that he would give you the same rate as your current host, give you free hosting for the rest of what you have left at your current host, and give you any addiitonal feature that they would offer. That special is long gone though.

Nah. You can take all the credit, Travis. I am so happy paying only $20/month for all the services I get (my electric bill dropped $100 after migrating off my server at home).

    O_O Twenty subdomains? My God . . . .

Travis, I’m not switching yet. Thinking about migrating the blog to somewhere else makes me cringe. I’m still procrastinating on upgrading WordPress to the newest version because I just don’t feel like fixing all the little things that will probably get broken in the process.

But if I do switch, or get another website with them, I’ll definitely put you as reference or however they do it. :)

This part of the process went well for me. The only hard part was moving the user accounts, which was actually easier to just rebuild them (this only happened because I has to downgrade from MySQL 5 to 4).

As far as WordPress, If you have all your mods tied into a theme, then copying the theme directory should cover you. Actually, just bring over your entire blog directory! Should work just fine. After all, you did mention how you like to “figure things out” with LaTeX and all . . . ;-)

Of course the operative word here is should. Whenever words like should, ought to, and probably appear in a migration pan, Murphy’s Law comes in (uninvited of course – that jackass), and fucks your shit up. LOL

Mainly though, I don’t want to deal with the hassle of moving stuff around from server to server at this point. At least not this week. :P

Heh, yea I’m on popcorn. I’ve never really wondered who else is on the same server, but now it looks like I’m going to have to poke around and see for myself.
